John Mootone's Profile
A word about John Mootone:
I stopped combing my hair mainly because I have never seen a hairstyle on a black man that wasn’t loaded with a boxed characterization or a social/political implication. I had dreads for a while and noticed more hippies talked to me. I tried cornrows and noticed more people were scared of me, but it made it easier to walk down Height Street. Now, I sport “the fucked up ‘fro.†Shut up, I know it has implications of its own. But right now it is a low image-impact hairstyle. I’m sure there‘s some emerging superstar somewhere who will change all that—there’s that guy from TV on the Radio ( I love TV on the Radio), which of course means my hair might have some kind of hipster reference. Then there is Cody Chestnut and Lenny Kravitz —but no one refers to them- I hope. Besides, they sport more of a natural, or combed out ‘fro. Anyway, I am a writer. I am a bad speller and I drink way to much.
