Discussing Politics and Travel

Bridge across the Truckee River in downtown Reno, Nevada

A poem about an encounter between old and young, poor and not so poor, in a downtown setting.

Downtown at dusk

in front of a cafe by the river

A group of men were sitting

at a table discussing

politics and travel.

One had been

to Istanbul

and thought it

an interesting place.

Another was disappointed in

the nascent presidential race.

"I wanted Rudy," he said.

"It's too bad he had to quit."

A grimy teenaged girl approached

and asked them for some cash.

"I want a cheeseburger,"

she said, sounding

younger than she looked.

"No,

go away,"

one of the men replied.

So the hungry girl turned

back towards the bridge

across the river

and silently

wandered

off into

the cool

windy

night.
