THE BOOK OF ELI

Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is an American actor

By investigating the obscure meanings of this movie, unraveling its deeper intrigue makes the surface understanding of the movie pale in comparison to its historic and intellectual message.

There is a significant cultural value within the abstract idea or the definitive purpose of the movie, which is well hidden behind the various action packed warrior like scenes that entertained and stimulated most of the audience, leaving very few to observe the deeper analysis of the film. Denzel Washington captivated the staged theater, causation everybody left the theater with high spirits and a sense of euphoria.

The Book of Eli, a post-apocalyptic thriller, starring Denzel Washington (with Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis) on a mission from God to bring the last remaining King James Bible to a safe location on the West Coast seemingly in order to save mankind.

Peculiarly interesting thought was the fact that out of all of the different versions of the bible that exist today, the producers of the film would think it a definitive part of the theatrical plot to chose the King James version of the Bible. This makes you wonder about its (the King James Bible ) importance and true significance in the real world. Is it the authentic word of God? or at the very least do the producers and writers believe that it is?

First off lets take a look at the title The Book of Eli”, Eli was the character played by actor Denzel Washington, he received the best actor award in 2001 for his role in the film Training Day. Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. (born December 28, 1954) is an American actor, screenwriter, director and film producer, he played in the book of Eli the role of a lone warrior who received his mission from the Most High God, to retrieve the last bible on earth and to transport it to a place that God would direct him. Eli survived by searching for useful items that enable him to barter and survive while he was completing his mission for God. Obviously God had other things that he wanted Eli to do during his mission, otherwise he would have told him precisely where to take the book, instead he allowed him to wander around what seems to be endlessly. But what were those other things, what was the other part of the mission? The title of this movie apparently gives some fascinating clues as to the meaning of this film and it is also referenced in the Bible which is the book (Eli's motivation) that Eli protected with his life throughout the picture. Referenced in the bible in the book of Matthew chapter 27 we find these verses

Matthew chapter 27

{27:45} Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

{27:46} And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

As we reexamine the heading of this film we discover that the writers true meaning of the title is “The Book of My God”. A very unusual title especially sense this Eli is played by a black man; usually Hollywood characterizes holiness with white actors. Now we see a little more of the puzzle as Eli a black man is secretly monopolizing God or so it appears. What is certain is that the producers and the writers recognize Eli as the exclusive servant of God and not merely God's source of protecting the book. Eli was very significant to God, it was the reason God spoke to him instead of calling on others to perform this task. Why Eli? There was a planet full of people. Why did the writers feel that it was so important for Eli, this lone black warrior to take on this mission, whereby he would secure and carry the book against all odds. It even appeared that he was the only black man in the picture or one of very few. It was extremely unsettling to me to see such a film where we have one black actor in the film and the plot forgot to strip in a few N words to make it authentic. Here it is just after the third worlds war, and the nuclear bomb had just went off prior to the beginning of the film (Eli called it the flash). We can summarize that the explosion took place because everything around was dust filled, with the air spewing burned particles all throughout the atmosphere. Eli wore a gas mask (you dont wear a gas mask for the sun) and used a dead man's corpse to lure in his prey (a cat for dinner). The time table is clear as many of the surroundings and technological gadgets (Eli had an I-Pod that he used for music, he even sported music by Al Green, we also see modern bridges, cars etc) pointed to the 21 century. So is the writers saying that we are about to experience a third world's war and a Nuclear attack? 'Hmm'. I find that there were many exciting things about this movie and felt truly intrigued about the pathological mysteries behind the plot so I observed myself investigating the plot under an endless interrogation of the film. One of the mysteries that most folks didn't comprehend even after the film was concluded was that Eli was actually blind, or at least partially or progressively blind. This made the plot further mysterious because he was one who functioned at an highly efficient fashion, especially as a warrior who annihilated his opponents, quickly dispatching anyone that came within arms reach. The evidence of him being a blind person was unequivocal as well as numerous, for instance most blind people develop a strong sense of smell, of hearing, of touch and taste, some even develop a sense of direction. Eli heard a small bird flying while his companion was talking and couldn't herself hear it even after she became quiet, he also fought several men in a dark tunnel using the dark as an advantage to overcome them. He was able to smell the salt water from the ocean when his companion could not, long before reaching the ocean. Another clue to his condition was that he never ran from his opponents, and he also read braille because the bible which he protected was written in braille, braille is a raised metal like letter system that enabled the blind to read through feeling the letters. Was it a coincidence that Eli was either blind or had an advance form of degeneration of the eye sight and that the last Bible on earth was in braille? Many of the characters in the movie were blind from the nuclear explosion, one woman was blind at birth, there was a woman that most folks didn't notice in the film who shaved Carnegie, she too was blind. Why so many blind people in the movie? It (mass blindness) was a symbol or representation of the masses who exist today intellectually blind to the realities and constructed criminal infrastructures within the scheme of this present world. The truth about politics, religion, the state of affairs and foreign affairs, the economic hype, not knowing that the economy has always been a manipulated beast.

You can tell that Eli was not completely secured or safe during the war as his body was burned over 50% of his body, we noted that in the film when he took a quick wash of his upper torso. He may have experienced these wounds (body burns and blindness) as a result of the war, or the sun that came through burning everything, or the bomb that caused the ozone layer to open which allowed the sun to run rampant. The biblical symbolic significance of Eli's blindness is that Eli is the confidential representation of the 12 tribes of Israel, in the picture he is one of God's chosen people who was spiritually blinded as a result of Israel's sins against God. Therefore Israel wondered the world in total darkness, blind to their history, to their biblical lineage, their culture and their holy heritage, not knowing themselves (their family name) nor their God (Jeremiah 17:4 plus additional biblical cogent evidence following).

ISRAEL SHALL LOSE THEIR MEMORY AND IDENTITY

    Job18:17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

Jeremiah 17:4 - And you (Israel), even yourself, shall discontinue from your heritage that I gave you;.............

Psalm 83:4 - They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from [being] a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

Isaiah 1:3 - The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: [but] Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

The calling of those lost but blind sheep (Eli) is symbolic to Israelites being called by God to wake up and do the will of God in these last days. And so we see a blind black man called by the most high God to return to the servitude of God as an Israelite, and this fact is cemented at the end of the movie as we see Eli reciting the Bible from memory while he prepared himself for death wearing a linen garment clothed down to the foot, which is the traditional garb worn by Israelites, having his head shaved clean, which is another tradition of the Israelites when making an oath with God.

Isaiah 42:19-20

19. Who is blind, but my servant? Or deaf as my messenger that I sent? Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord's servant?

    20. Seeing many things, but thou observest not: opening the ears, but he heareth not.

  1. Isaiah 41:8-9

8. But thou Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen the seed of Abraham my friend.

9. Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.

ROMANS 11:25

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles (actual gentiles) be come in.

(there are two parts to Israel one part is still the natural Israel (not blind to the mysteries of God, they are the elect of God) or the good olive tree and the other part is the captive Israel ( blind to God and their own heritage, contaminated by the mixing of their seed with the other nations, the mixing of there worship with idol worship and false gods, becoming the wild olive tree)

Romans Chapter 11 verse 7

What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for, but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.”

Isaiah 42:13-16

{42:16} And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them

Surely we can now envision this film in a more constructive light after understanding that there is more to movies than mere entertainment. The connections are staggering, the implications are many, and we are called to continue to unveil the reality of such hidden messages. Eli played the part of the Israelite Savor who protected the word of God while Carnegie's role was that of Satan who sort to use the power of the Bible as a weapon of persuasion against the masses, pretty much how it is being used today. That's why Carnegie said in the film that “it is not a fucking book” but a weapon which will give us control of the people, if we want to control more than one fucking town we got to have that book, The people will do whatever I say if the words are from the book, it happened before (meaning that it is happening now since the time frame of the film is after this present time, we are currently living in the past as it relates to the movie itself) and it will happen again”. Therefore the film is telling you that you the masses of people who worship in religion are being played out of pocket, tricked by the power structure and controlled by the persuasion of the Bible into serving Satan through the guise of religion.

Another interesting oddity in the film is the fact that Eli as the representation of the Israelite's killed many people within the movie and yet God still protected him. This demonstration of physical powers shows that Israelite's have always been misrepresented as timid characters who never went to war with the enemies of God. The film corrects that myth as it shows the true nature of the Hebrew Israelite's who were the servants of God and the authorized warriors or soldiers of the Most High God. The ten commandments says that thou shall not kill, yet on many occasions God has called the Israelite's into war to kill other nations for their heathenism. What does this all mean? It means that the commandment to not killed referred to not committing murder and to not killing thy brother which is another Hebrew Israelite, they were commanded to live in peace will all men if possible. However the Bible says that there is a time to kill; is this a contradiction between there is “a time to kill” and “thou shall not kill”? No! This film shows that Israelite's were many things to God, utilized by the Most High as priest, warriors, servants, teachers, as Holy people. Israel was God's battle axe and weapons of war authorized to deploy judgment upon God's will.

Deuteronomy

{5:17} Thou shalt not kill.

{5:18} Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

{5:19} Neither shalt thou steal.

{5:20} Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Matthew

{19:18} He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

{19:19} Honour thy father and [thy] mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself

Ecclesiastes

{3:1} To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

{3:2} A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted;

{3:3} A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

{15:12} [And] if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.

2 Corinthians

{13:11} Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

{13:12} Greet one another with an holy kiss.

Jeremiah featuring 51:20 my battle aXe and weapons of war.

{51:19} The portion of Jacob [is] not like them; for he [is] the former of all things: and [Israel is] the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name. (recall the Lord's prayer, thy rod and thy staff comfort thee)

{51:20} Thou [art] my battle axe [and] weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;

Apocrypha we read (paraphrasing now) if possible live in peace with all men;

We can dance around the meanings and the intent of this film all day, but what is certain, we can't deny the parallels that it summarizes as there are many inferences which demonstrates the use of subliminal education within this film.

Melody J Haislip;

I agree with you, “Training Day” is one of Denzel's best flicks, it showed his acting skills with a deeper more villain like aura than his usual good guy roles. I don't think 'The Book Of Eli” is as entertaining as “Training Day” but it certainly has plenty food for thought.

Thanks you for your thoughts

Religion has been historically utilized in a vain and adversarial manor in opposition to objective and free thinking people. In my analysis of the movie, I sort to display the many negative facets in which movies and religion was being used to usurp the free and creative minds of the people at large.

There are however several devices that are being used in the media (as always) and we should know that the entertainment vehicles which are focused upon the masses is a sure but hidden part of the media's crowd controlling arsenal. Films today give off more subliminal messages than we realize, the question to ask is; Who are these messages intended for and for what purpose?

Garry Crystal its always great to hear your analysis, and a great conversation ingredient.

Thank you very much

Pictures like “The Book of Eli” and “Training Day” testified to the world that Denzel Washington processes many untapped acting talents. The producers who generally court him should allow him the opportunity to star in more films as the villain. I think his acting skills and his popularity will peek to a new level if they did.

More than 40 years ago, my youthful political hero, Bobby Kennedy posed the quesiton, Suppose God is Black?

I love your observation - "Eli is played by a black man" Suppose God is black indeed!

Would that not be a cosmic joke on all those white sheeted fanatics?

It would indeed be a shocker to most folks if God happened to be black. However it is not idealistic or practical especially since he is said to be a spirit having no substantial form; but the thought is certainly relevant in light of the fact that for centuries we were told by the religious establishment that he was white.

Caballero_69 Interesting commentary, and very well appreciated.

Thank you

This is the stuff that I left out of the article, 'the neglected scenes.”

So we note that Eli didn't lie or give false witness, he didn't steal, and he didn't murder, each of his acts of warfare was conditional to protecting himself his property and his friends. I also noted the food that he ate in the understanding that he also followed the dietary laws written in Exodus and Leviticus 11, he ate a bird and a cat they both neither “chew the cud' (means to vomit or regurgitate and rechew food) or have split hooves (while there were many people in the film who became cannibals). Eli seem to be in line with all of the customs and laws of the scriptures, it is more than likely that he was an Israelite and he understood that realization about himself. There were many tell tell signs within the film that indicated the results of a third world's war and a nuclear explosion slated to occur in the states, it shows the people in complete chaos, in a state of famine, eating human flesh which was the reason for the constant examination of everyones hands upon introduction to see if you were shaking meaning that you ate a lot of human flesh and your system was poisoned with the blood of an opposing organism. With all kinds of human diseases, it would be unhealthy to eat another human being, this we peeped in the film when we saw the old couple who lived alone, they survived by killing their quest eating their corpses and burying them in their backyard. Eli noted that their hands shook because of too much red meat, that meat was human flesh, there also was and a lack of clean water. All of these things will take place as a result of the final war that is destined to happen in our time, famine, destruction, pandemonium, chaos, violence, war, pestilence, and so on, and as the picture noted it will be as a result of the words that are written in the Bible. Because of the damaging words which continues to haunt this system as it did all other kingdoms before it war will be waged against the truth, and against those who maintain that truth, they will seek to destroy the bible as Hitler once tried to burn up all the bibles that he could get his hands on but was unsuccessful. Apparently we find the movie to be closely parallel to life as we know it, with some hidden meanings which references biblical scripture, history and or future destiny.

It came to me this one last thought concerning the book of Eli, that Eli wheeled the two edge sword. This phenomenal weapon is spoken of in the bible, as the Messiah who was called Christ would use the two edge sword in the last days, that two edge sword was the actual sword that Eli used for physical battles and the Bible he used for spiritual battles. A two edge sword cuts both ways spiritually and physically, it shall fall upon and come against all that are unrighteous. You can find this scripture in Ecclesiasticus {21:3} All iniquity is as a two edged sword, the wounds whereof cannot be healed.

Revelation {2:12} And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

I continue to offer my most humblest commendations, it goes out to everyone who participated in this discussion.

Thanks again.
