TALK ABOUT IT - What's a great date in 2011?

Credit: Derek Gavey
Haven't dated in six years. What's a great date in 2011?

Now, six years after my wife passed away, I think I'm ready to date. So, what's a good date?

I'm in my mid to late 40s and have been divorced for about six years now. It's taken some time for me to truly feel comfortable with the idea of spending time with another woman in a romantic situation. I loved my wife very much and lost her to breast cancer. It was a tough battle and extremely painful at the end. But I am finally starting to think about dating again after all this time. I'm pretty sure that this one lovely lady that I recently met through some mutual friends is interested in me. But as far as dating, I really have no idea what the right type of date should be.

We could enjoy a great dinner and maybe head on over to a jazz club after our meal. But is that really what women think of as a good first date? I really think I need a few more ideas before I feel like I have enough nerve to ask this woman out.

Hope you can help,

Looking for a great date night!

"Looking for a great date night!,"

First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. To be by your wife's side until the end shows just how much you loved her and probably still have a great capacity to love again.

Now, after six years, you want to start getting out there to mingle again and as you said, 'date.' Your idea of a nice meal and a night cap at a jazz club does sound nice. But you may want to make sure that jazz is something that your lady friend likes or is at least interested in. Also, keep in mind, depending on the club, the music may be very loud. This means you don't really have the opportunity to talk more to get to know each other.

Here's what I suggest:

Come up with three different possibilities and offer this woman the option of the three to choose from. The great thing about this is you are selecting the date options, so hopefully you would like any one she selected. Additionally, you aren't putting the pressure on her as some men do when they say, 'what would you like to do?' Personally, that drives me nuts!

It will probably be a refreshing change that a man has come up with three different types of dates or occassions to spend time together. Remember that movies don't allow you time to talk with one another. Also, outdoor activities can be terrific but you are subject to the weather so you want to have a back up plan.

Check out the various activities that are happening in your area online for ideas as well.

Happy dating and look forward to hearing how it turns out!
