Equality Schmequality

Are we all really equal? Is absolute equality the best objective?

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Famous words from The Declaration of Independence, but how much weight do they really carry today?

The attack on these rights begins at conception. While created equal, many men's lives are snuffed out while still in the womb. Equal opportunity doesn't exist for the millions of aborted babies each year. They are all equal in value, and inherent worth as humans, but many never have the chance to recognize the potential that beats inside their tiny chests. Twenty-two percent of all pregnancies in America are aborted! If a child is fortunate enough to actually be born in America, they will find from their first breath on, that environment and personal decisions will be the main factors in how equal we actually are.

The rallying call of late seems to be equality. Folks are marching in the streets under the banner of equality. The disturbing facet of the chant is that most are chanting for equal results, and not equal opportunity. The only way to guarantee equal results is to take away from the high end of the spectrum and redistribute to the low end of the spectrum, leaving the result as a wash somewhere in the middle. So the equal results equation necessitates subtraction. Subtraction. Taking away from. There is a curious condition in the human makeup, that we don't like things being taken away from us. From a two year old's toys to a Union Member's Collective Bargaining Right's, we don't respond well to subtraction. In the economic sense it will punish those at the successful end of the spectrum, taking away from their motivation. Giving freebies to those at the low end of the spectrum does them no favors either. It steals their sense of accomplishment, the thrill of the hunt, and the satisfaction of success, that is so necessary in finding fulfillment.

Equal Opportunity or Equal Results?

The rights addressed in the Declaration of Independence are of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Liberals of today have attacked the right to life, with abortion, and they have misunderstood the pursuit of happiness. It is the PURSUIT of happiness. Your government does not have to guarantee your happiness. The right of Liberty, should open the door for you to pursue your own happiness.

Equal Opportunity?

If the left truly believed in equal opportunity, then they would support school choice programs. There are millions of kids held hostage by teacher's unions in terrible schools. They have no opportunity. They are hardly equal. Give them opportunity, give them choice. This really isn't complicated, freedom of choice when it comes to schools, right to life when it comes to babies. It's all about equality.

All Men Created Equal?

Not hardly. There are men that work much harder than I do. There are men that invested more time and energy into an education than I did. There are men that are much brighter than me, and have business savvy that I'll never possess. There are men that received fortunate breaks, that didn't fall my way. Are we all equal? Not by a long shot. Should I have a claim on the wealth that their lives have afforded them? Not at all. We are not guaranteed equal results. Parity in possessions is not a fundamental right under The Constitution or The Bill of Rights. I prefer a Government that guarantees me an opportunity, but doesn't take it away from me if I manage to succeed. If our government just gives us a chance, the ingenuity, hard work, and perseverance of the American people will shine out to the rest of the world. Just give us opportunity, not equality.

Great job, that equality does not come from someone but it is natural. therefore does not need a institution to enforce it. the only thing we need is be left along. the government job is to guarantee a place were we can prosper. and also guaranteed security.

No dean you are wrong, we do not need government to step in to American live and limit the right of womans. we just think it is stupid when the judge are making law. that not the court job, but the parliatment job. The people law should be respected. now when activist judge come and try to change our law while on the bench, that wrong.

Wow! What a welcome! I see why your name is Hurricane. First of all, when addressing abortion, I was dealing with the Declaration of Independence, not Supreme Court rulings. We are endowed by our Creator with the Right to Life. It is not given by the United States Government, and the goverment is not protecting that right.

Serious question, if a woman delivers a child 2 months premature, is it a fetus for 2 months? No. So at some point that is a baby living inside the womb.

The reason the school inequality hasn't been fixed IS because of the powerful Teacher's Unions. Voucher's which would afford equal opportunity have been shot down by them and their lobbyists at every turn.

"Stupidity writes: "Just give us opportunity, not equality." F**k That! I want both opportunity and equality. There is no real opportunity for those that are denied equality. Don't you hate it when the Right-wing wants to give away one of America's most fundamental Rights! And of course, he wants to give it away to the rich. No surprise there."

Are you under the influence of HALLUCINOGENS? Where did you come up with that? Giving away rights? Giving away rights to the rich? Seriously, how did you construe that?

So you were endowed by your Mother and Father with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness? Or do you not accept The Declaration of Independence?

You errantly conclude that I said equal RIGHTS, when I obviously stated EQUALITY, dealing with thedifference between equal opportunity, and equal results.

"Yes, we are and when we are denied our equal Rights we no have a Right to recourse. Now, we do not have a right to another persons property. But, yes we are a nation working to provide every American equal rights and opportunities. Regardless of the race, sex, or class.

UMMMM....That's supposed to be race, sex, or religion.

The Repeal of the 14th, is to deal with the issue of pregnant women breaking our laws in order to give birth in America. If the Mother is not here legally, then her child would not automatically be given US citizenship.

The Declaration of Independence states "Creator" not "Creators" they must not have recognized your father in the process... Coincidentally enough, neither does abortion. I guess your views are consistent.

The word is "Creator", with a capital "C". Maybe that's a clue as to what was meant?? lol

Let us look at section one of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States --

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

A woman who is unwilling to carry a pregnancy to term is subject to involuntary servitude if laws prevent her from legally exercising her decision. Of what crime would such a woman have been duly convicted. The crime of pre-marital or extramarital sex? Do we live in a Theocracy?

When the male author of the Declaration of Independence wrote the beginning of this article, it is a virtual certainty that he was talking about viable human beings living outside the womb. Unfortunately, he may have been talking only about white, male human beings, but in no case was he talking or thinking about embroyonic or fetal human beings. Even if he was, however, no human being has any right to the involuntary servitude of another human being. Therefore, those who claim unwillingly pregnant women should be prohibited from terminating these pregnancies are actually advocating the involuntary servitude of the better half of the American populace.

Those who would not choose abortion are completely welcome to make their choice when it is their occasion to do so. They are not, however, entitled by any belief they may hold be it religious or otherwise to make their personal choice binding on every other American woman who is, has, or will some day face the same decision.

Remember the true hero of the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee was the publican who was humble about his religious practice and achievements, not the Pharisee who openly boasted of his piety. Practice a religion if you choose faithfully, but remember that you are not the ultimate judge. What seems to you to be such a magnificent performance of holiness may be viewed less favorably by the diety you supposedly believe in. The same goes for imposing your judgement on such a personal and ethically imposing matter as terminating a pregnancy.

In the article veers from abortion propagandizing to a swipe at teachers' unions and a plug for "school choice". As a teacher who struggles to educate children from an economically devastated community with gaping gaps between funding needed and funding recieved, I can tell anyone willing to listen, the kids are held hostage by societal indifference, not teachers' unions. In an errie echo of the Kerner Report, "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—-separate and unequal." This is even more true of the school systems. So called school choice would simply make this even more tragically true. This reactionary nostrum [school choice] is simply the updated and less offensive name of the mid-twentieth century phenomenon of 'White Flight".

The Declaration of Independence is an inspiring document and its principles are clearly stated. What a pity so many patriot wannabees ignore the clear context clues to what the words mean. It was not an anti-abortion screed and it does not level any charges against either public education or teachers' union. It was written in a splendid attempt to inspire a unified effort. If you doubt that review these closing lines - "And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." The effort they launched and the Republic they envisaged was not an "every one for himself" enterprise. They were more an "we're all in this together" endeavor. They would have understood unions as they later understood the Union.

Let us now strive to uphold the principles so nobly expressed without repeating the mistakes of those who first expressed them.
