Michael Vick took apart record books and Redskins defensive schemes on Monday night with a look of such ease it made you wonder if you were watching a dream. From the very first play from the snap, Vick looked other worldly. As if he were an Eagle, flying high above the field of play, above the rain, above the past he has worked hard to put behind him. Michael Vick was flying high and the Eagles were putting up historic numbers in the NFL record books.
Coming into the game Donovan McNabb had agreed to a 5 year, 78 million dollar deal with the Redskins, a deal I do not understand at all. You would have thought he would have been on top of the world. Ready to take down his former team. Coming out on top of things....feeling a bit more settled in his new Washington environs. But no. The Redskins kickoff to start the game. Michael Vick comes on to the field. The Eagles offensive line was simply amazing. Vick rolled out, waited, waited what seemed an eternity and then lofted the ball 88 yards down field to Williams for an uncontested touchdown. Boom! Amazing....simply amazing.
Of course, it didn't stop there. Vick had a 14-of-18, 264-yard, 3 TD assing performance in just the first half of the game - an NFL record. Then, Vick added 6 carries for 66 yards and 2 more scores BEFORE halftime. He finished out the game connecting on 20 of 28 passes for 333 yards and 4 touchdowns adding 8 carries of his own and 2 more touchdowns. You might want to read that again, slowly, to let it actually sink in as to what happened. Here are some of the NFL records on the night: Michael Vick is the only player in NFL history with 3 touchdown passes and 2 rushing touchdowns in the first half of a game. He is also the first player in NFL history with at least 300 yards passing, 50 yards rushing, 4 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns in a game. These records are now part of NFL history.
More records: The Eagles 59 points on 8 touchdowns were the second-most in team history. The 592 total yards on offense (260 rushing, 332 passing), 28 first-quarter points and 45 first-half points are all Eagles team records. The Eagles, who scored touchdowns on each of its first 5 possessions of the game, also set a Redskins’ opponent record with 45 points in a half. The 59 points were also the most ever scored against a team coached by Mike Shanahan.
Michael Vick becomes a free agent at the end of this season. According to reports, the Eagles will almost certainly keep hold of Vick whether by a contract extension or the franchise tag. The Eagles are now tied for 1st place in their division with a 6-3 record. Next up, the New York football Giants, who some in the sports media think is the best team in the NFL this season so far. I think though, right now, the best QB in the NFL, is Michael Vick and he is flying high.
