I've definitely been off my prediction game this year. In previous years, I had a really good record. A REALLY good record. Not so this year. But what the heck, might as well continue now that I've started.
The World Series starts tonight. It's the Texas Rangers vs the San Francisco Giants. Two unlikely participants, or unlikely in most predictors minds. But here they are. The Giants back for a repeat appearance and the first time Rangers. Lots of storylines with these two teams. Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses. Both teams beat really good teams to get to the series. Both teams are capable of winning. I think the series is very close. In fact, I think it may be one of the best ones seen in years. The first game will feature Cliff Lee vs Tim Lincecum. A pitching matchup that is nothing short of headline.
Laying aside the Giants obvious Joboo mojo, I don't think they have the offense to ultimately beat the Rangers. The Rangers have the bats to put games away in short order and the Giants don't have the bats to come back at the end of games. It's just that simple. Both teams have excellent pitching, but it's at the plate where they differ. It will be very interesting to see if the pitching can keep the runs low or if the Rangers can still bang out 4 or 5 runs, if they can then the Giants are done, because the Rangers have the pitching to hold the Giants lineup to 2 or 3 runs perhaps less.
So, for the World Series, I'm going with the Rangers in 6 games. It will be a great series and both teams will play their hearts out, but there can be only one winner and that winner will be the team of second chances on their first try - the Texas Rangers.
