Jazz To Reign Over the Hollywood Bowl

by Ricky Ricardo (writer), Los Angeles, February 27, 2007

Hollywood-Cloudy skies greeted me as I awoke on the morning of February 22nd, 2007. This did not put a damper on my plans to attend the special news conference to hear the line-up for the 29th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival.

Invited musicians, media (print, radio, internet and T.V) and music industry representatives were amongst the V.I.P. guest in attendance at the Playboy Mansion for the press conference.

The Hamilton High School Academy of Music directed by Dan Taguchi entertained the crowd with a set of straight-ahead jazz.

Darlene Chan-Associate Producer, Playboy Jazz Festivals, and Festival Productions, Inc. shared humorous stories and anecdotes as she announced the line-up of artists scheduled to perform at the 29th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival, June 16 and 17(Fathers Day Weekend) at the historic Hollywood Bowl.

From straight ahead to contemporary jazz, scorching blues to swinging big band, fiery salsa and world music, the 29th annual Playboy Jazz Festival will present a stellar line-up of talent, representing the entire spectrum of jazz. Featuring renowned jazz giants, international superstars, and emerging newcomers, the two day event will present a variety of highly anticipated debuts by veteran artists and today’s most acclaimed young talents, as well as the return of popular favorites.

Saturday, June 16- the festival is scheduled from 2:30pm till 11pm. I hope that you plan on arriving early to avoid traffic, and most importantly to see and hear the opening act. The show will kick off with the talented group of young musicians- The Eagle Rock High School Jazz Ensemble.

THIS IS NOT THE ORDER OF APPEARANCE- The festival will also feature the hot Latin sounds (salsa, Latin jazz, cumbia and meringue) served up by Johnny Polanco Y Su Conjunto Amistad- beware of long conga lines snaking around the bowl. Bill Cosby will once again lead another group of stellar artist in Cos of Good Music XI, James Carter Organ Trio, Randy Brecker-Bill Evans Soulbop Band, The Count Basie Orchestra, Angelique Kidjo, Issac Delgado, Phil Woods Quintet, Chris Botti and Buddy Guy are all scheduled for the opening day of the festival.

Sunday, June 17- The festival is scheduled from 2pm til 10:30pm.
THIS IS NOT THE ORDER OF APPEARANCE- The line-up for the final day will will feature Taylor Eigsti Quartet, Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Miles Long( yes, this is the actor that you remember from the celebrated long running classic television series- "The Cosby Show". Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas will add to the festive atmosphere by showcasing danceable cajun and zydeco tunes. There will also be Red Holloway's 80th Birthday Celebration featuring vocalist Kevin Mahogany. I'm sure there will be other surprise guest showing up for Mr. Holloway's set. The music continues with Richard Bona, Marcus Miller, and Norman Brown Summer Storm: Peabo Bryson, Marion Meadows and Jeff Lorber, Terence Blanchard, Arturo Sandoval, Dianne Reeves and Etta James Roots Band.
Actor and comedian Bill Cosby will return and serve as Master of Ceremonies for the 27th time.
