In Los Angeles, people love to laugh. This is evident in the actual amount of the many clubs and venues dedicated to comedy that are situated across Los Angeles County from Long Beach to Santa Monica.
We've all heard it a million times, that laughter is the best medicine. Indeed it is. But even better yet, not only is laughter an act that keeps the doctor away, but a laugh a day will actually helps you live longer! That's right, and here's how it works:
First of all, laughter reduces at least four of the neuroendocrine hormones associated with stress response. These are epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and growth hormone. Stress responses are known catalysts of the aging process.
When we "stress out' there is a loss in neural and hormonal balance which can cause increased oxidative damage and a quickening of the aging process which affects our hormone secreting glands, cell repair, the collagen in our skin and connecting tissues. Stress isn't funny, but don't worry, be laughing!
In addition to laughter instead of stress, let's also consider that the immune system loses it's ability to fight off infections as you grow older. This increases your risk for getting sick, and may make immunizations less effective. It sounds quite frightening, but here's the good news: it's best to just laugh it off folks! Clinical studies have shown that humor strengthens the immune system. Now, isn't that funny?
Researchers have found that after subjects are exposed to humor, there is a general increase in activity within the immune system. There is an increase in the number, as well as the activity level of natural killer cells that attack viral infected cells. In addition, laughter also causes those killer cells to attack some types of cancer and tumor cells!
Los Angeles is often billed the "Creative Capital of the World", due to the fact that one in every six of its residents works in a creative industry (wiki). According to the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, "there are more artists, writers, filmmakers, actors, dancers and musicians living and working in Los Angeles than any other city at any time in the history of civilization."
With that in mind, rest assured that this is the city where it isn't too hard to find a good joke. There as many comedy clubs in LA as there are pubs in Ireland.
Here's a link to a list of some of the city's best comedy clubs and venues where the cover charges may vary, but the laughs are always free.
