Maddux, Dodgers beat Reds in series sweep

by Marquis McClure (writer), Los Angeles, August 31, 2006

Greg Maddux picked up his 330th career victory and led the Dodgers to a milestone of their own as they beat the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3, in a series sweep Wednesday night.

The win set a franchise record for the Dodgers. Their 21 wins in August are the most in any month since moving to Los Angeles in 1958. And their 71 victories on the season match their total for all last year.

Maddux was his usual efficient self, throwing 77 pitches over seven innings, 54 of them strikes. He also made a couple of great defensive plays--turning a double play off a comebacker in the second and making the final out at first in the seventh--and even drove in two runs.

Maddux helped the Dodgers strike first in the second inning, when he doubled to center field, scoring Andre Ethier. Maddux further helped his own cause in the bottom of the sixth, laying down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt which scored Wilson Betemit.

They scored another run in the fourth when Russell Martin hit a drive to Reds' left fielder Ryan Freel. Freel's throw to the plate was perfect but bobbled by catcher Jason LaRue, and Nomar Garciaparra came around for the Dodgers' second run.

They also scored in the fifth when J.D. Drew hit a triple to center which easily scored Julio Lugo. Drew attempted to score himself, but was out before he got to the plate after a throw by center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. was relayed home by shortstop Rich Aurilia as Drew rounded third.

LaRue made amends for the error--which was actually charged to Freel--in the top of the sixth, when he hit a line drive over the left field well to finally get the Reds on the board. The Reds also pushed runs across in the seventh and ninth innings, but were never really a threat to take this contest.

To top it off, the Dodgers teed off on the Reds' bullpen in the eighth, hitting three solo shots off Scott Schoeneweis and Matt Belisle, which accounts for their seven runs.

The Dodgers have now won five straight to maintain their three-game lead over second-place San Diego, who defeated Arizona last night. The win also means the Dodgers have swept the season series against the Reds, having also swept the Reds in Cincinnati earlier this month.

The Reds, who have lost their last six, now sit 1 1/2-games behind San Diego in the Wild Card standings and four games behind St. Louis in the National League's Central Division.

The Dodgers have tomorrow off, then they will host the Colorado Rockies for a three day series beginning Friday night.
