Times Square where a terrorist attack we thwarted

The Times Square bomber admitted that he wanted to commit massive destruction and killings. He proclaimed himself as a Muslim soldier in the fight against non Muslim countries.

In a New York court room Monday, a Pakistani-born U.S. citizen, the “Times Square Bomber” pleaded guilty to a 10 count indictment that included a charge to use a weapon of mass destruction. Usually, there is a feeling of relief when someone who is guilty confesses to their criminal actions. This case however, left many with a shiver up the back. It was the latest example and maybe the clearest of the dangers America faces from seemingly normal citizens who have adopted a virulent form of Muslim beliefs and methods.

Faisal Shahzad, of Shelton, Connecticut described himself to the court as a Muslim soldier whose mission was to kill Americans because of their terrorizing actions like the drone attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that he was part of the answer to the U.S. terrorizing the Muslim nations and the Muslim people. He showed not a bit of remorse and said that he would plead guilty a 100 times over. This will be unnecessary as the married young man of 30 with a wife and baby will likely receive a sentence of life in prison.

The curious and scary part of this case is that it involves a naturalized U.S. citizen of Pakistani parents who received his bachelors and master degrees in the U.S. and chose to kill innocent people because of his Muslim ideology. He showed himself to be a man of no nation but one who represents the worst of those that fly the Muslim banner and seek to overthrow Governments that do not adopt their extreme form of life and belief. When the Judge asked him if killing innocent people who happened to be in the vicinity of Times Square was justified, his reply was typical to all the other Muslim killers and defenders. He said that these people who might die deserved to because they elected the Government. This was justification enough for the deadly result in his eyes.

The impact of this case will not be known for a while. In the short run, it validates the concern of many Americans that people of Muslim faith, even U.S citizens, who are extremist and walk among us will perpetrate heinous and horrific crimes against innocent people. Americans will look to their political leaders to see how and if they will react differently to protect lives. One action would be renewed support for many of the Bush administration’s policies to fight terrorism including expanded wire tapping of suspected terrorists in the U.S. While the ACLU and George Soros will attack it, the American people see more clearly the danger before them – the enemy within. This is the individual of Muslim belief who justifies the killing of innocent people based on a jaundiced interpretation of Mohammed’s teachings with the goal of a global Muslim caliphate.

Mr. Shahzad was an educated sane individual with a lot to lose by his actions who chose instead to be a self described soldier of the Muslim army and kill Americans. It did not matter to him if there were tourists from other countries in Times Square that would be killed when the bomb went off. One cannot describe this as a person who was blind to this possibility. His mission was simple – to kill.

This criminal terrorist personifies the reality of this modern world of Muslims who will not stop at any level to further their cause. They see the world as one of no nations, but of a system with a singular religious belief that would govern all aspects of life. They see Israel and all the countries who want Israel to live in peace and for the Palestinians to have their own land as enemies. They sit across from you on a bus and at a restaurant, and then plot against you and all that they think you stand for. You are not one of them, so you are the enemy.

Mr. Shahzad by his actions and the intensity and clarity of his words in the court room showed us what we are up against. This is not a normal war and the rules are different. We need to adapt as well.

This is an educative process, and somewhat difficult for us to believe. But there appear to be no shortage of Muslims, even those born and raised in the U.S., whose "cultural" roots run deeper than we can fathom.

I wish there was a way to separate religious beliefs from the political arena. I wish we (The USA and the rest of the world), would stop all the senseless killing. Period. I wish people would understand life is a gift and people are not expendable.

This is so disturbing to me- the inherent propensity for violent acts that so many human beings harbor from the George Hugeleys of the world ( murder in cville, va) to the twisted soul of this man described in your article But just as there are all variations of the religious right, eg. those who would shoot down abortion doctors in cold blood versus those gentle souls who merely support an anti-abortion position, so is there variation among Muslims. Just as there are many variations of the Bible's interpretation within Christianity, so is there variation in the messages of the Koran. I think we must be careful not to try and convict all muslims for the acts and views of these radicals. John, thank you for making us think about all of this.
