Revolution

by Julian Gallo (writer), June 21, 2010

The Revolution begins in the bathroom mirror.

This is a call to arms.
This is an appeal to those who
wish to elicit change.
Read----a lot.
Stop listening to pundits
and especially politicians.
Learn about history.
Learn about other cultures.
Think for yourself
and stop attaching yourself to ideology.
Listen to people who think differently from you
and stop preaching to the converted.
Don't only associate with those who think
just like yourself.
Be open to all things.
Explore, educate, learn.
Live the things you believe
and not just talk about it.
Do something and most importantly,
look in the mirror
and change
what looks back at you
first.

Your points are well-taken. It is too comfortable to remain in our own niche where there is little disagreement; hence there is little growth. Much food for thought here.

Thanks, Cher. It took me a long time to come to this. I think before any significant social change can occur, we must look within ourselves and change first, otherwise it's just politics, you know? Thanks for reading. :-)

It can be invigorating to discuss matters with someone who does not share the same views. What a valid point you made about this.

Thanks, Theresa. I find many people are preaching to the choir these days. Even if you don't agree with another's opinion and viewpoint, I feel it is essential that one understands what the other person is thinking. To just shut them off does no good. One never learns a thing that way.

It is freedom of expression during a discussion that affords us the platform or arena to learn about those opposing views. It broadens our outlook.

Agreed, Theresa. It seems that these days discourse has taken a frightening turn. No one seems to want to listen, they just want to reenforce what they already believe. Just opening your mind to a differing viewpoint, or looking at history with a broadened perspective can do a lot to make one actually think. It keeps people from being mired in ideology like it's a religion.

This could easily be my new chant....lol....Julian, everything mentioned in this poem is so reasonable, it's a wonder why we all haven't adapted said behaviors.
