The aid convoys to Gaza, which are largely publicity stunts aimed at embarrassing Israel, illustrates the double standard being practiced, one law for the world and another for Israel.
Every nation reserves the right to stop and inspect cargo for contraband. The US Coast Guard and Navy do it all the time in our war on drugs and terrorism. Ships are stopped and searched and if found carrying illegal goods, can be impounded.
The big difference with the recent Israeli actions is American sailors rarely are met with force or screaming violent crew members. Israel was.
Do you think American sailors wouldn’t shoot-up a ship if they were attacked? Duh….But, who gets all the flack…who else, the Jews… a relatively small group who, through an historic tragedy, have long been history’s scapegoats, first from the right and now the left.
Israel is at war with Hamas. The people in Gaza support Hamas, therefore Israel is at war with the people of Gaza. That’s one way to rationalize any action taken. They have more than enough justification to search Gaza-bound ships.
First, all this blockading could end with a simple unconditional peace agreement. But, as we know, the Palestinians are divided with Gaza Hamas faction wanting and endless war of liberation.
Second, until there is peace, if the aid groups want to help Gaza, why not send the goods through Egypt, which isn’t at war with their brother Arabs, but, which blockades its border with Gaza just as Israel does. Well, where's the embarrassing publicity in that? Remember. Gaza was the only Israeli captured land the Egyptians didn’t want back. Can you wonder why?
We can also wonder why with all the far more brutal acts daily taking place in the Third World, in areas such as Darfur, the Congo, Afghanistan, Iraq and many more, why any action taken by Israel rates so much coverage. There are a few reasons for this.
- Israel’s predicament can be viewed as a possible microcosm of world conflict to come…a conflict of cultures and religions.
- Much of the critical media coverage comes from European nations awash with Muslim immigrants…5 million in France, 2 million in the UK…those are big TV ratings demographics that can’t be ignored.
- Anti Semitism in Europe runs very deep because of its 1,500 year history there. Yet, guilt over the Nazi Holocaust also plagues the European conscience. Anything that will mitigate this guilt by again demonizing Jews is played up for many European audiences.
- But just as important as all of these is the bloated governmental bureaucracy that inhabits this small nation….a bureaucracy that has scores of press offices, yet has lousy press performance. Israel rarely takes the public relations initiative from the Palestinians. They have long relied on the fact they are an egalitarian social democracy confronting of region of hostile theocracies.
Yet, today the Western World is populated by people who have little of no knowledge of history. In America, many of our citizens can’t even point to Israel on a map.
The polarizing of politics in the West between one extreme and the other has created anti intellectualism. Paraphrasing Shakespeare, a plague on both their houses.
Right wingers live in the past and can’t accept change unless it will benefit them financially. The left hates the past, living solely in the present. But, what both the right and left have in common is a lack of vision for the future
And there’s no better example of this ignorance than people buying into much of the Palestinian case, one that defies logic. They want peace but with a myriad of conditions attached and unless they achieve it, they will stay put, continue the insurgency and wait out the Israelis until they’re finally driven into the sea.
So, here’s a history lesson:
After the fall of Rome in the 5th Century, the Jewish population of Aeoli Capitolina, what the Roman’s renamed Jerusalem in 130 A.D., had rebuilt itself inhabiting much of the fabled walled city.
Then came the Crusades in the 11th Century when another bout of Catholic ethnic cleansing got rid of the Jews a second time.
Fast forward, during WW1, the hard pressed Turks who had been riding rough shod over the Arab nations for four hundred years began selling swamp and desolate land to Jews and Jewish groups. The Arabs were so alarmed at this and the ensuing Balfour Declaration of a Jewish homeland in Palestine that they began attacking Jews.
Then in 1929, the Hebron massacre took place where Arabs killed 67 Jews. This spawned Jewish self defense groups such as the Irgun which resulted in a tit for tat uprising that killed 300 on both sides combined.
During WW2, some Arabs leaders, such as the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem worked for Nazi Germany as a propagandist and a recruiter of Muslim volunteers for the Waffen SS and other units. He did this on a promise from Hitler, when the war ended he would put an end to the Jews in Palestine.
But, the key this conflict came in 1947 when the UN sponsored a two state solution, one which the Jews accepted and the Arabs rejected, saying they would fight the first Jihad since the Crusades.
Enter the great fair weather liberals. Since so much of liberalism is a pure fantasy of ideals, the only thing they have to work with is present day conditions. That’s why having an underdog to champion is so important to them. And what better underdog than the genuine original Christ killers, who were about to get waxed by overwhelming Arab armies.
Yet, even on the eve of their annihilation those blood thirsty Arab hating Jews had the nerve to publish their terrorist state charter:
THE DECLARATION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL
….The State of Israel will be open for Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering of the Exiles; it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
We extend our hand to all neighbouring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighbourliness, and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish people settled in its own land. The State of Israel is prepared to do its share in a common effort for the advancement of the entire Middle East.
These warlike fascist words so infuriated the Arabs they attacked the new country, lost several wars, but are still prepared to wait until hell freezes over to get rid of Israel.
As for western liberals, their fascination with the new left wing state grew and grew until it became too big for it boots. You see for a nation to maintain its underdog credentials it can’t win all the time. Additionally, it has to be firmly on the left wing. Israel was turning right, thanks largely to a growing Arabic Jewish population.
Yes, what the Arabs never bring out is that when Palestinians were fleeing Israel, a half million Jews living peacefully in Arab countries were literally driven out and told to go to Israel.
Yet, amazingly today a Jew can get citizenship in some Arab countries, but a brother Palestinian, through an Arab League edict, can’t. It was felt they would give up the fight if allowed to resettle. Another key Arab tactic…the permanent refugee.
Yet, the big dilemma for the liberal European nations was how not to back Israel which still faced overwhelming odds….250 million Arabs against a three million Jews. The solution to that came in the aftermath of the Israeli 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
The Arab nations scored a masterstroke by localizing the conflict….it was morphed from the Arab-Israeli Conflict into to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Instead of Israel being grossly outnumbered, it now was the bigger protagonist. And the liberals once again had an underdog to champion. But what type of underdog? It would be difficult to name three positive aspects of Palestinian society acceptable to western society.
Yet, we can no longer claim certainties here in America. The Israel-Palestine conflict is a prime example of what might be termed our inverted universe.
America’s cultural conservatives, you might think, would a good fit for Muslim society, which is mainly very conservative…keeping women in their place, home and family values, pro life, anti gay. Yet, the Red state lot, a fountainhead of US racism and anti Semitism, are the most ardent supporters of Israel.
The American left, which you might think would be in solid with an egalitarian democracy, the only place where Jews and Arabs live together in the region, supports Palestinian rights. Their hypocrisy is sickening since most aspects of Arabic society, from honor killings to gay murders to the second class status of women and other religions, are repulsive to liberals.
One of the main lessons we learned in Vietnam is during wartime you can’t make friends out of your enemies. This is especially true in the Middle East where being civilized can be interpreted as being weak. That has long been the reason behind Israeli stock response to attacks.
Israel’s main worry though isn’t world opinion or even Iran. It’s time and no peace. The Arabs main weapon is the low level largely stagnant societies they maintain. Israel, however, is a modern progressive nation that needs stability and security to maintain its population. The Arabs feel they can wait 50, 100, 500 years. They will still be here. But will Israel?
