Palm Springs Day Tripper

by Barry (writer), Los Angeles, August 23, 2006

If you ever wanted to escape L.A. for just the day, you might want to consider heading east on the 10... destination Palm Springs. Within just two hours, you'll find yourself in a desert paradise. In order to get the most of your trip, try to leave by at least 10am and plan on getting back past midnight.

A great first stop is the outlying resort city of Indio. There you'll find the world famous Shield's Date Farm. Their date shake is a must!

Next, you'll want to head to El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert. El Paseo Drive is often referred to as the "Rodeo Drive of the Desert". There you'll find a nice selection of art stores and restaurants. Spend about an hour walking down both sides of the street. If it gets a little too hot, you can always take the shuttle bus to get from one point to the next.

Downtown Palm Springs is coming up, but first there's one more stop. In Cathedral City, make sure to check out the civic center and the IMAX Theater. There's even a large water fountain that you can walk under and get a little wet. Definitely refreshing when the temperature is over 100 degrees.

It's time to head to downtown Palm Springs. Palm Canyon Drive is the place to be. It's also where you want to return to in the evening. That is when the street really has the look and feel of the Third Street Promenade, with hundreds of people walking on both sides of the street.

Some things to do before the evening sets in.. is to check out the local casino The Spa Resort Casino, or take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for an amazing view of the city and its surroundings.

After a nice dinner and stroll on Palm Canyon Drive (or maybe even a ride on one of the horse carriages), it’s time to head back to L.A. Enjoy!

Never really considered Palm Springs for a day trip. It's actually a nice idea. Thanks for the insight!
