However before I pile on with my own take on what I believe is actually going on; it’s worth reminding those who folow my writings, an article I wrote about a year ago entitled “The demise of the “American Dream”.
In it, I briefly outlined the financial crises that we’re currently in and the policies enacted by both parties, that will eventually drive this nation into financial ruin. Arizona is simply an extension of a government that can no longer govern, or enforce its own laws. The financial crises in part began years ago with the deregulation of the banking industry, followed by years of reckless borrowing and risky speculation and a systemic lack of political will by both political parties, in enforcing key oversight laws of government controlled financial institutions such as Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. In short, the federal oversight agencies that should have been overseeing the financial dealings of these agencies were nowhere to be found.
Today we have another crisis, and yet another example of our federal government gone amuck, afraid to enforce its own immigration laws because it lacks the political courage to simply address the issue, we now have the state of Arizona forced to take control of its own security.
Imagine for a moment you are in the sanctity of your home, and suddenly someone breaks in and walks into your living room, looks around and walks out…how would you feel?
I suspect like most of us, you’d be alarmed, that a stranger would actually come into your home uninvited. Now imagine if that same stranger threatened you, menaced you and made you fearful. I would imagine you’d immediately call the police. Now imagine (if its even conceivable) the police decide not to come or investigate, because they simply don’t feel they should enforce the law…you’d be outraged, and like most you would do everything possible to safeguard your property and protect yourself, and if need be take the law into your own hands, to make sure that your loved ones are safe…I know I would!
And that’s exactly what’s happening in the state of Arizona, the federal government as abdicated its constitutional responsibility and the rule of law “to protect and defend” its borders against illegal foreign invaders.
The statistics speak for themselves while New York City has a population almost 6-times greater then the city of Phoenix the overall violent crime rate in Phoenix actually outpaces that of the Big Apple, with murder and non-negligent manslaughter at 30.3% as compared to New York City’s 10.7%.
Add to those statistics trafficking in illicit human cargo combined with a massive drug trade and you have an epidemic of monumental proportion. Last year alone the border patrol confiscated over 1.7 million pounds of pot, and captured over 1-million illegal aliens trying to cross our borders.
Another statistic that is seldom sighted is the 16% of felony convicted crominals within the illegal alien population that sneak yearly through the Arizona border.
By any account, these are staggering numbers, and while the mainstream media and left leaning political pundits try to purposely misinform the public on the new law, by accusing those in law enforcement of racially profiling and targeting anyone with “brown skin”, as the primary reason to stop an individual and ask for identification, however nothing could be further from the truth.
The law is quite clear, in that an individual needs to be in violation of a law, before law enforcement can inquire on the individual’s legal status. In truth the Arizona State Law, mirrors exactly the current federal immigration law’s that are currently on the books, however unlike the federal government, Arizona will now simply enforce the law.
The federal government under our Constitution is the enforcement arm of immigration laws, however if the federal government fails in its sworn obligation to adequately protect our boarders and enforce the law of the land…then what?
Obviously Arizona has reached critical mass, and its people need to be protected. The simple fact is that over 70% of Arizonians approve of the new law, and almost 60% nationally also approve.
As usual there seems to be a total disconnect between the left leaning media, and political ideologues who want to exploit the issue for whatever political gain is achieved irregardless of the consequences, and the American people, who simply realize that Arizona could very well be their own city or town under siege by foreign invaders!
The irony to this incredibly ridicules situation, is to simply take a look at Mexico’s own stringent immigration laws that ensures that foreign visitors and immigrants are:
- In the country legally;
- Have the means to sustain themselves economically;
- Not destined to be burdens on society;
- Of economic and social benefit to society;
- Of good character and have no criminal records; and
- Contributors to the general well-being of the nation.
The law also ensures that:
- Immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;
- Foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;
- Foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country’s internal politics;
- Foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;
- Foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;
- Those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.
The Mexican constitution strictly defines the rights of citizens -- and the denial of many fundamental rights to non-citizens, legal and illegal. Under the constitution, the Ley General de Población, or General Law on Population, spells out specifically the country's immigration policy.
Obviously, what is taking place in Arizona has nothing to do with the rule of law or even civil liberties, but rather another political battle to “fundamentally transform America”.
Once again, “the will of the people” well be usurped by a system that has been gradually manipulated and corrupted, until we now hardly recognize it any longer, as being a “government by the people”.
Arizona is merely another issue to be used for partisan politics, a platform to be exploited by politicians, who care nothing about national security, or the rule of law…it’s a means to an end, and nothing more.
However, my concern and anger about our porous borders didn’t begin with Arizona or this administration; it began long before Obama and company came into office. It began in 1993 with the first World Trade Center bombing, and of course to that that sunny Tuesday morning in 2001, in New York City, and has continued ever since.
As nation we seem slow to learn the lessons of history, and one would think that the carnage that took place almost 10-years ago, would have changed forever our casual and ambivalent approach to illegal immigration. Incredibly we’ve tightened security at our airports, and at times have placed ridicules restrictions on our citizenry, while all the while our illustrious leaders have turned a blinds eye towards our borders.
The recent events on Christmas Day and now in Times Square are simply another illustration as to how foolish our government is in dealing with terrorists. While most politicians are quick to run to a microphone, and pat each other on the back for a job well done, in truth these events went completely undetected by Home Land Security, and it was only by the grace-of-God that these explosive devices failed and that of quick thinking civilians who took action, that prevented another catastrophic event.
The inconsistency in our national security policy simply boggles the mind, what’s the point in spending millions of dollars on the newest screening gadgets and hours running through a gauntlet of security measures at airports, while millions and millions of illegal aliens simply stream across our borders?
For those who think that I’m merely spouting words from a disconnected vantage point, let me set the record straight, I’m the son of immigrant parents, and a first generation Italian-American, so I know a few things about immigration law.
Like many first generation Americans, I’ve personally witnessed the trials and error of my parents, trying to achieve the “American Dream”, and like many who came before them they took their turn “legally” in the pecking order, acquiring their “green cards”, and of course as any alien can attest too, there were times when they were harassed and humiliated, they were called WOPS, and given menial jobs, living in crowded tenements on the lower east side of New York City.
However, through it all, they survived. They went to night school and learned the language and the history of this great nation, and one by one, each family member became a U.S. Citizen, my grandmother achieving that honor at the tender age of 85, and I recall the day she took the oath of allegiance, in halting English and with tears in her eyes, she told me how proud she was to be an “American Citizen”.
So excuse me if I don’t shed a tear for this new generation of “illegal alien”, who seems to think it’s their “right” to circumvent the law, before they even apply for citizenship, and I couldn’t imagine for even a moment my parents or any family member of mine being so disrespectful to a country that has given them so many opportunities…for them it would have been simply shameful.
However, it seems this generation of immigrants and sadly many lawmakers and political activists have little if any regard for the rule of law, and perhaps it is indeed a generational thing, this new found lack of respect for authority, and I believe we’ve allowed ourselves to fall victim too an overabundance of multiculturalism, at the expense of our own national identity.
That’s not to suggest that we shouldn’t be proud of our individual heritage, and indeed we should celebrate our diversity, that’s what America is all about, however we should also may pay homage to those that made this “American Dream” possible…our Founding Fathers, and while I believe that the vast majority of illegal aliens are hard working people, who simply want access to a better life, they need to understand that no society can exist without the rule of law.
And there are those within the immigration community, that simply believe that America is nothing more then a “cash cow”, an ATM Machine to make entitlement withdrawals, any time they choose, without regard, and some prefer the status-quo of being under the radar screen and continue being “illegal”, and others even “game the system” by having children in America, thus claiming to be citizens, by proxy.
Immigration is a serious issue, and there’s enough blame to go around. We’ve reached this crisis point because we’re a greedy nation, buying labor on the cheap while Mexico does little to protect it own borders because they welcome the American dollar that helps prop up their failing, corrupt and struggling economy.
However, while we exploit cheap labor and Mexico looks the other way, there is a price to be paid, and while many in our government may think that the violence spilling over into Arizona is merely a local border issue, perhaps they need to be reminded once again, of that September morning in New York City, and be warned that…”God forbid you allow history to repeat itself”.
