Cowardliness is a Crime

by taking off the mask (writer), Los Angeles, April 26, 2010

When is it okay to keep silent, and when does it turn into a weakness? (Inspired by a scene in The Kite Runner.)

As the little boys run

kites flying above their heads

above the trees

aiming for the clouds

yet missing terribly

they laugh and run

but not me

I am serious

focusing on the prize

the victory

the name

the honor

oh what it would feel like

to have everyone know me as a winner

second place means nothing

nothing compared to first

how I wish to get my father's attention

all I have to do is win

with my friend beside me

holding the line

I feel victory in my sweat

and power in my hands

I will win

need to win

it's the only way

how else will I prove to my father that I am his son

get him to love me

he watches me from our roof top

I feel his eyes like fire

the intensity is unbearable

I feel the heat

run

run

run

my servant is chasing the blue kite

for me a thousand times over, he promised

I run trying to find him

but fate had its own plan

they found him first

I watch as my servant

my best friend

is being raped

and all for me

I watch and do nothing

I am nothing but a coward

how can he be so strong and loyal

yet I stand like a mute fool

is cowardliness a crime

or just a weakness

I think both

because being silent and not taking a stand

can be worse then commiting the crime

no wonder my father doesn't love me

I am nothing

I don't deserve my friend's loyalty

never can I look him in the eyes again

for I have forsaken him
