March 28, 2010, Palm Sunday afternoon was graced with beautiful weather in Los Angeles, CA, along with a wonderful time of sharing, inspiration, affecting music.
A queen of Blues and Jazz - Vocalist, Barbara Morrison and her infectious ensemble presented a LIVE recording concert that shared Jazz, Blues, and R&B in down-home fashion.
Roland Holmes- "The voice of Jazz, Blues, and Gospel" at KUCI - ww.kuci.org was our host and introduced the audience to Barbara's eager and exciting band consisting of the following great musicians.
Guitar - Charles
Piano - Steve
Drums - Peter
Bass - David
The crowd was engaged in an intimate and engaging atmosphere with Barbara who was earthy, essential, and electric in her performance and interviews.
She kicked off the program with one of signature tunes, "I Love Being here with you" and "Take me to the river".
Barbara shared with the audience in regards to her New Web Show of which we were each participants of the first recording.
Barbara began her first interview with a representative that was her guest. She shared with us regarding "Hands for Africa, an organization dedicated to providing restored hope, clothing, food, medical assistance, toiletries, artificial limbs for Amputees, wells for water, agriculture development, to provide education for adults and victims and their children, healthcare and education, and micro finance for trade and housing through community construction.
They currently have a project ongoing to help victums of the Haiti Earthquake in addition to other involvement in which they are reaching out to help.
All of Barbara's featured guests immersed the audience in a time of glorious music and union beginning with Music Arranger and Guitarist, Yu Ooka, who performed a truly gorgeous rendition of Jerome Kern's "All the Things you are".
He followed this up with a funky and soulful sounding "Blues in F" with plenty affecting grooves and love showered on the audience by Yu's infectious style.
James - Trumpet and Flugel Horn was a special guest musician from Houston Texas and he shared some great signature tunes that were what I'd call a mixed bag of Jazz & Blues treats.
Marva - a new vocalist shared an "R" plus -rated version of the tune Barbara often teases audience with, "Bumblebee". According to the lyrics of this tune this bumblebee is a creature bringing ecstasy instead of pain to the colorful musicians' life. Marva's delivery is raw and unbridled Blues. It gave reason to shout and audience complied!
A vocalist that names Barbara as a mentor, she will surely follow in the great West Coast Queen's steps singing with an edge and groove that is pure Jazz.
Marva teamed with Barbara on the Staples Singers soulful "I'll take you there" What a beautiful and splendid performance!
Barbara's ensemble added to the joy with a combination of musical runs, accents, chord changes, harmonic undertakings that were astounding.
Joy, Joy, Joy! All the roots of spiritual connected cohesively with Blues, Jazz, Gospel, and Rhythm and Blues.
Barbara's creative and sensitive style reaches across all walks of life to bring innovation, comradie, community oneness, awareness, good times, and a preservation of Jazz and Blues.
It was an afternoon of wonderful music linkage and opportunity to give back on a consciousness and meaningful manner.
