In Los Angeles, the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza was sizzling on a recent cool evening. I’m not referring to the various delicious, spicy dishes available in the International Food Court.
Turning up the heat for mall shoppers were The Latin Jazz Syndicate. This tight ensemble is heating up the sizzling hot Los Angeles Latin Jazz scene and going for global exposure in the future.
This concert was part of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Live concert series. This is a free monthly series of FREE!!!! Entertainment held in Sears Court in the evening. The Latin Jazz Syndicate was making an encore appearance after heating up the Sears Court last Fall 2009. Mall Management made a wise decision in booking the group for a return engagement. This great ensemble performs some danceable infectious rhythms with a lively mix of contemporary arrangement of original tunes.
The make-up of the band features Bijon Watts-trumpet/flugelhorn; Angel Rodriquez-congas; Oscar Cartaya-bass; Carlos Ordiano-keyboards and keeping it in the family, Ruben Ordiano-on drums. The group’s tight arrangements of Latin versions of jazz and pop standards were well received by the crowd.
Their hour long playlist were “Stellar by Starlight,” “Morning,” “an original tune “Momentum,” and a tune by the late great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, “I’ll Close My Eyes” by Blue Mitchell, “What You Won’t Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell and “I Can’t Help It” by the King of Pop Michael Jackson and closed their crowd pleasing set with “Night in Tunisia.
Fans can expect many exciting things from this group in the future in the form of their debut CD as well as assisting in heating up and turning up the humidity at summer outdoor concert series. They will be at Jazz, Latin Jazz and World Music Festivals throughout the West coast and across the United States and perhaps a trip or two out of the country.
