Poachers in the Congo are mainly mobilised soldiers. They carry war arms, systematically killing animals that are protected, such as elephants, monkeys and many more endangered species in the Salonga park.
In Congo some areas containing protected animals, like Monkoto in the province of Ecuator, are under control of poachers. These poachers kill the animals which are protected there without repercussions. Even the policemen who are in this area are unable to protect the animals from poachers because the latter group uses war arms.
This situation has remained unchanged for a year now because the policemen deployed in this area are unable to face these poachers who are strongly armed. Even though the park commissioner calls for the government to do something to protect these animals, which can attract tourists to the country and help the national economy, nothing has been done. The poachers make this area inaccessible, and just last week a fight between the policemen in charge of protecting this area and a group of poachers consisted of more than 80 people.
