Poachers Destroy Protected Species In Congo

Protected animal species are at stake in Congo. These animals can grow the economy if well protected but poachers strongly armed are killing them.

Poachers in the Congo are mainly mobilised soldiers. They carry war arms, systematically killing animals that are protected, such as elephants, monkeys and many more endangered species in the Salonga park.

In Congo some areas containing protected animals, like Monkoto in the province of Ecuator, are under control of poachers. These poachers kill the animals which are protected there without repercussions. Even the policemen who are in this area are unable to protect the animals from poachers because the latter group uses war arms.

This situation has remained unchanged for a year now because the policemen deployed in this area are unable to face these poachers who are strongly armed. Even though the park commissioner calls for the government to do something to protect these animals, which can attract tourists to the country and help the national economy, nothing has been done. The poachers make this area inaccessible, and just last week a fight between the policemen in charge of protecting this area and a group of poachers consisted of more than 80 people.

Melody, you are rights. In this country, people are dying like flies every second because of guns in the hands of some gangs. It is worse for animals who do not speak like people do. This will lead to great catastrophy in days to come if no one helps. But the first step must come from Congo.

Ed, You are right and I think if no attention is done we will come somewhere with no wild life. Human beings are becoming more and more cruel toward themselves, and now towadr animals.

Thank you.

Bessie, you are rights. If no efforts are deployed to protect these species, we will end having them around us. People need to be educated that animals also have rights and they deserve protection and peaceful life. The matter is the cultural myth that surrounds some wild animals in the DRC. Some tribes believe that eating the meat of a given wild animal empowers them in a way or another. Nothing is wrong with these people but they simply need education.
