Asthma Attack

Photos of a graveyard at midnight that remind me of what I see during an asthma attack

My attempt to capture the feeling of an asthma attack with written words

A darkening fog
Clouds my reason
Blurring my vision
Impairs my will
Halting my movement
Knocks my knees
Knowing my loss

I fall

Chest on fire
Feeling the world's
Full weight on

Chest on fire
Panic sets in
Air, need air

No way in
No way out
Fading to black

Help!, I shout
Silent call unheard
Pain becomes distant

Unfelt feeling there
Not here where
I pass out

I have mild asthma, but nothing like yours. That's terrible, it must feel like dying. In fact it was downright disturbing just reading about it. I have to assume you're on medication, but it doesnss't sound sufficient. Maybe you should try a service animal, one who can go bark at your wife or son when you go down. And, no, I'm not trying to be funny.

Melody,

Thanks for the concern, but my asthma is mild, too. This is simply what my subtitle says:

"My attempt to capture the feeling of an asthma attack with written words"

I have drawn on experiences of other asthma sufferers, such as my mother, who have been hospitalized and almost died from attacks. Therapies such as alergy shots, home nebulizers, improved inhalers have greatly increased the quality of life for people like my mother.

When I write I try to step out of my own existance and experience a character, emotion, being that is not my own. When I write something that "is not me" I experience a discovery process that is hard to explain. One word for it is exilerating.

Thanks for you comment and support!
