Exploring LA for under $10

by pleasurepalate (writer), Duarte, January 04, 2007

A few years ago, I decided to break out of my same old routine and made it my mission to explore as much of the architectural, cultural and historical landscape of Los Angeles and Greater Los Angeles as I can. Through my explorations, I discovered how much I really am addicted to all that is fun, quirky and beautiful about the City of Angels.

There's still a lot I have to discover, but for now, here's a list of some of the things I've enjoyed seeing or doing the most so far (and believe it or not, it won't cost you an arm and leg to do some of these activities.)

1) Metro Art Tours (FREE) - Go on a docent-led tour exploring the public art of the Metro Rail stations. This is also a great way for you to get a feel of how the Metro system works, but in a fun, learning atmosphere. Tours run the first Saturday and Sunday of every month.

For more info, go to:

2) LA Conservancy Walking Tours ($10) - Take 1 or more of 13 different tours exploring LA's architecture and history. My personal favorites are the Broadway Theater Tour which explores the unique architecture and history of the largest concentration of pre-World War II movie houses in America, and the Angelino Heights Tour, where you get to see the beautiful Victorian homes of one of LA's oldest suburbs. Most tours run every Saturday.

For more info, go to:

3) The Watts Tower ($7) - The Watts Tower is something you'd have to see to believe. Built by one man, Simon Rodia, the Watts Tower consists of nine major sculptural forms made of steel and covered with mortar embedded with pieces of ceramic tile, pottery shards, sea shells, and broken glass. Take your camera! Tours are offered Friday through Saturday.

For more info, go to:

4) Hsi Lai Temple (FREE) - Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights is one of the largest Buddhist Temples in the Western Hemisphere and with it encompassing 15 acres, you can see why it's so large. The temple and the grounds are quite beautiful and if you're hungry, you can even partake of an all you can vegetarian lunch for only $5.

For more info, go to:

5) Descanso Gardens ($7) - Everyone has heard of the Huntington Gardens, but when you get a chance, check out Descanso Gardens. Hidden in La Canada, Descanso Gardens includes a five-acre rose garden, a Japanese garden and teahouse, a camellia forest and so much more. Throughout the year, they have special events like the Japanese Garden Festival which includes taiko drumming, Japanese dancers and a Japanese tea ceremony. This is definitely a hidden treasure worth visiting.

This is only a small sampling of what you can find in LA. Believe me, there's a lot more you can do and see, but you won't really know that unless you get out of your house and do a little exploring. Hopefully, I've given you some fun options, so stop dawdling and get out there.
