Francisco Aquabella Latin Jazz Quintet Heats Up LA Kings Downtown On Ice

by Ricky Ricardo (writer), Los Angeles, December 31, 2006

Los Angeles-The Southland’s largest holiday outdoor ice skating rink returned to Pershing Square for its ninth spectacular season.
People from all over Los Angeles, out-of-town visitors, celebrities such as David Hasselhoff-(Baywatch), Seth Green(Austin Powers) and Scott Belcular (Star Trek/Quantum Leap)were seen chilling out under a beautiful Southern California sun from November 16 through January 15,2007 at the LA Kings Downtown On Ice.
The Downtown On Ice was made possible by a generous sponsorship from the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, LA Kings, and Councilmember Jan Perry (9th District).
The LA Kings Downtown On Ice has been dubbed “The Rockefeller Center of the West”. The huge outdoor ice skating rink lies downtown in the heart of the city, with the adjacent historic buildings framing this popular ice oasis.
LA Kings Downtown On Ice opens seven days a week (including Holidays). The Downtown On Ice features various activities such as “Glide In Movies”, a free youth hockey clinics, a free winter festival, weekend kids’ zone interactive entertainment and more.
Two free concert series featured lunch time concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and swing bands entertainment on Sunday’s.
I had the pleasure of being in attendance for a concert on Friday, December 29, 2006, featuring the legendary and incredible conguero Francisco Aquabella Latin Jazz Quintet. Francisco Aquabella warms the hearts and heated up Pershing Square with two highly entertaining sets of hot Latin jazz to the delight of the audience. Francisco Aquabella never fails to put on an awe-inspiring performance in all of the times that I have seen him perform with his own band or sitting in with several local bands. Francisco Aquabella was aided and abetted by the dynamic sounds of Bryan Velasco-keyboards, Ben Clatworthy-saxophones and flute, Larry Vasquez-bass and Larry Carbonel on drums.
The dance floor was in constant use as salseros dance to the following tunes- “La Mulatta Rumbera” , “Guajira Los Pollos” , “Fiesta Mojo” , “La Costa” , “Tin Tin Deo” , and “Noche Azul”.
You still have time to enjoy the LA Kings Downtown On Ice for skating, concerts and other special events.
