Early morning, sky just beginning to bloom
with pink and orange and blue,
you sit at the balcony table,
tear into a tangerine,
thumb digging up a ribbon of rind,
sip coffee from your good-luck mug.
A rake scrapes the earth below,
squirrels shake the ivy-covered trees,
and love birds whistle staccato songs.
The world is waking up.

I love early morning, and the damn chickens.
