Artown 2009 House Award

by Just Average Joe (writer), Reno, July 06, 2009

Credit:

Northern Nevada Regional MLS should be a sponsor and the Northern Nevada/Reno-Sparks Board of Realtors should be the organizer

Since Reno is Artown, I suggest that Artown add a couple more events. One being The Artown 2009 House Award and the other Artown 2009 Business Award.  Here’s how I see it.  Using the Northern Nevada Regional MLS area numbers, NNRMLS http://www.nnrmls.com/ should be a sponsor and the Northern Nevada/Reno-Sparks Board of Realtors should be the organizer, entries are nominated for each area.  1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners from each area will be chosen by each area’s Artown House/Business Award Committee.  All committees must have one local art painter, sculptor, Realtor, Interior Designer, architect, Landscape Designer, police officer, fire fighter, water authority, ecologist, art teacher, biologist, veterinarian, tree arborist, and horticulturist.  Nominations are from August 1st of each year through midnight of April 30th.  Winners are announced by Artown each June 1st.

Overall Reno-Sparks winners will be chosen by the Reno-Sparks Artown House Award Committee and the Reno-Sparks Artown Business Award Committee composed of one local art painter, sculptor, Realtor, Interior Designer, architect, Landscape Designer, police officer, fire fighter, water authority, ecologist, art teacher, arborist, biologist, veterinarian, and horticulturist.   Same for the MLS areas Carson, Gardnerville/Minden, Other Douglas County, and Lyon, Storey, Churchill counties.  The criteria will be overall day and night artistic effort and effect inside and out, low water usage, sustaining ecology created, home security, pet safety, and fire safety.  Homeowners, business owners and Realtors could use the prestige of being an Artown House Award and Artown Business Award nominee and winner in their advertising.  Like the Best of Reno News and Review and Gazette Journal contests.

Reno-Sparks

Comm/Indust Core     Artown Area 115 House Winners      Artown Area 115 Business Winners

Downtown Core         Artown Area 116 House Winners      Artown Area 116 Business Winners

North Reno                 Artown Area 119 House Winners      Artown Area 119 Business Winners

NW Suburban Reno    Artown Area 121 House Winners      Artown Area 121 Business Winners

And so forth all the way through to N Washoe County Area 190

Then all the Reno-Sparks 1st place Area Winners will be judged for the Reno-Sparks Artown House Award and Reno-Sparks Artown Business Award.

All the Reno-Sparks 2nd place Area Winners will be judged for the Reno-Sparks Artown House 2nd Place Award and Reno-Sparks Artown Business 2nd Place Award.

All the Reno-Sparks 3rd place Area Winners will be judged for the Reno-Sparks Artown House 3rd Place Award and Reno-Sparks Artown Business 3rd Place Award.

All the Reno-Sparks 4th place Area Winners will be judged for the Reno-Sparks Artown House 4th Place Award and Reno-Sparks Artown Business 4th Place Award.

All the Reno-Sparks 5th place Area Winners will be judged for the Reno-Sparks Artown House 5th Place Award and Reno-Sparks Artown Business 5th Place Award.

Same for the MLS areas Carson, Gardnerville/Minden, Other Douglas County, and Lyon, Storey, Churchill counties.  Carson will have its own Carson Artown House Award Committee and Carson Artown Business Award Committee.   There will be a Gardnerville /Minden Artown House Award Committee and Gardnerville/Minden Artown Business Award Committee. There will be an Other Douglas County Artown House Award Committee and Other Douglas County Artown Business Award Committee. There will be a Lyon, Storey, Churchill Counties Artown House Award Committee and a Lyon, Storey, Churchill Counties Artown Business Award Committee.

Artown, having just completed its thirteenth year, has become one of the largest visual and performing arts festivals in the country due to its size, length and scope – over 350 events in 100 locations, collaborating with over 100 partners for 31 days throughout the month of July. 60 % of the events offered are free. A record breaking 350,000 people attended Artown events in 2008.  (65,000 are attributed to the live broadcast of 11 events on Reno’s channel 13.)

Joe, what a wonderful idea!  Do you realy think the Board of Realtors will get behind it?  I already have in mind some houses and businesses to nominate.  I'm sending them an e-mail at info@rsar.net right now.

Great idea Joe but I just don't see the Realtors getting behind it.  Realtors here, maybe not just here, are too lazy and self-centered to do something neat like this.

Great idea!  It’s not quite cash-for-grass, but Northern Nevadans have some incentive to be water-wise.

Like the idea but doubtful about the Northern Nevada MLS as the Northern Nevada MLS seems not to be registered with the Nevada Secretary of State.

The Reno Sparks Association of Realtors PAC seems to be registered with the Nevada Secretary of State but not the Reno Sparks Association of Realtors

Can’t even verify if Northern Nevada MLS or Reno Sparks Association of Realtors even have the required Nevada Business Licenses.

I left Broowaha for the opposite of why I came, contributed, and involved myself with others I grew to like and respect, and stayed as long here as I did. Broosters Morgana, Craig, Julian Gallo, Garry Crystal, Ed Attansio, and HurricaneDean magically transported and deeply transformed my life, and then my family’s lives. Soon after, we left the Christian faith, have been surfing and dipping into self-improvement stuff, and changed our registration from Republican to Green. No more do we let anyone including an invisible god just tell us what to think, or read, or write, or say, or do, or feel, or be.

Brian Burghart, Editor of the Reno News & Review, wrote “Call me old school, but I believe newspapers must go back to what they did when they provided a high-quality product and service.” Brian listed his ideas for a high-quality newspaper product and service. They are, well-written local stories, in-depth coverage and investigations, insightful commentary, and more. The only print newspaper in Northern Nevada that I thought was providing all that was Brian’s Reno News & Review, which I’ve taken to exclusively reading on-line. I’d heard about this Reno BrooWaha, then I read this Craig B.’s comments he had posted to articles in the Reno News & Review with a link to this Reno BrooWaha. I thought his comments were insightful commentary, and more. I further read this Reno BrooWaha. There I discovered well-written local stories, in-depth local coverage and investigations, insightful commentary, and more.

I say Good Riddance to the old clunky print newspapers, as they are stale and often dead on arrival when they hit the newsstands. Gannett and Hearst just don’t get it and I’m not waiting for them to do so.

Here’s the story here as I now see it. Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John arrived in my virtual Reno Broowaha neighborhood here with a thud of monumentally sized disdain, and ignorance. I overall call Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John, The Wrecking Crew. Along with The Wrecking Crew came a lot of Milksops --what Brooster Bill Friday had long ago cynically and correctly tagged with the fitting RER label. The Broosters, and they know who they are, and the now Broos, who are so woefully ignorant of Broowaha’s rich history, and constitutional rights, are plentifully different in worldviews and their expression of it. Broosters are intricate, intellectual, and passionate with complex deep sense of humors, know how to construct a sentence and a paragraph, in other words, tell stories, and carry on a conversation. On the other hand, Broos are uncomplicated, shallow, superficial, ignorant, and vengeful, and do not know how to carry on a conversation. The Wrecking Crew trampled on civil rights, good manners, common sense, and worst of all, my fun. Want some examples? The Wrecking Crew gave me plenty.

  1. The Wrecking Crew presumptuously immediately eliminated my vibrant virtual Reno Broowaha neighborhood. Gone Reno Broo, Gone. Just wiped us out. A complete vibrant community blithely destroyed.
  1. The “Backassward” Wrecking Crew moronically removed all of Brooster El G’s articles but left his comments after some talk about El G’s personal attacks in his comments. What part of I have no problem with The Great El G’s articles, never said I did, did The Wrecking Crew miss here? What part of I have a problem with El G’s personal attacks in his comments only did The Wrecking Crew miss here?
  1. The Wrecking Crew reneged on Broo’s promise of shirts to interviewees Bill and Morgana ana. Tacky. RRR rrr. Then they stick their foots further in their mouths by months later giving everyone a shirt. The shirts to Bill and Morgana, which neither still doesn’t have, were for their Contributor of the Month. To get a shirt under Classic Broo, it had to be earned. Under Dumb & Dumber Broo with its lowest common denominator thinking rules – of course, everyone gets a shirt. Nobody loses and everyone wins a shirt. What a rude slap to Bill and Morgana, and the other interviewees.
  1. Unknown to us at the time, The Wrecking Crew presumptuously and illegally changed content previously published here. Something we all here know all too well now.
  1. Also unknown to us at the time, The Wrecking Crew arrogantly and illegally removed content previously published here. Something craig b knows all too well now.
  1. Unknown to us at the time, The Wrecking Crew contemptuously and illegally removed contributors and writers here. Against their will, Cheryl and Broother in just what once was our thriving vibrant Reno Broowaha community. Gone Reno Broosters Cheryl and Broother, Gone. Just disappeared when The Wrecking Crew arrived in my neighborhood. Cheryl and Broother removed with NO discussion FIRST with the other Reno Broosters who none had complained about Cheryl and Broother. A complete community destroyed, and personal attacks on its members.
  1. The Wrecking Crew arrogantly immediately decides we’re now Broos. Wtf, I am not a Broo. It’s Broosters NOT Broo if The Wrecking Crew had bothered to read what we were all about in our stuff.
  1. Beyond the arrogance and disdain of The Wrecking Crew was the equal arrogance and disdain of “The Broo Writers” aka The Broo Police aka The Broo Guardhouse aka Broo Neighborhood Association, that suddenly appeared in my Broowaha neighborhood. They yapped about how great they are to each other, telling me what the rules are for a site they just joined that I had already been a member of for quite a while. These rude and ignorant characters from the Other Site shoved in with me just keep uploading steadily some really useless banal insipid boring at times stupid stuff. What’s the point to a blog? The point is Links, Baby, Links. Just like any neighborhood, any community. It’s those connections. Links and exceptional content go hand in hand because links always follow exceptional content.

Broowaha today is NOT Broowaha. It has NOT been such since The Wrecking Crew and The Milksops arrived. Their massed arrogance and disdain, illegal actions, and no sense of humor, destroyed our creative Reno Broo community here who had some actually telling stories and others were getting better at it, like me. What this blog today is NOT what those like me had worked so hard and with such community support and sensitivity to build.

I want the Broowaha name removed from this blog. This blog is now the opposite of what made me join Reno Broo in the first place. This blog is a setting not encouraging to telling the story. Hell, it’s not even encouraging of my just talking with my old neighbors. I can just hear The Wrecking Crew and The Milksops whining and complaining but few stories are now being told here, and precious few have any idea how to carry on a conversation let alone an intelligent one. This blog today incorrectly brags about what isn’t important here, oh, we had so and so many articles submitted this week. So what. So what!

So what when so few of those articles now tell a story. And the self-satisfied “authors” of these “articles”, these Broos, of these not stories, display few, if any, clue as to how to carry on a real conversation here or an intelligent one. With each other or with Broosters. That’s why this blog’s pageviews are down and stay down. Reno Broo was on a rocket rise in pageviews because it told stories, stories that touched others, who talked about it in their comments. Reno Broo was on a rocket rise in pageviews because it told stories, stories that touched others, who talked about it in their comments. Under awesome Brooster Ed Attansio, same for San Francisco Broo’s pageviews. And so forth for the other former Broo editions with their rocking Broosters.

From what I can figure, The Wrecking Crew bought the Golden Goose laying the Golden Eggs, then killed it. Broowaha used to rock. Reno Broowaha ROCKED. Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John convincingly proved they didn’t rock.

TONY: JACK, WHY DID MORGANA LEAVE?

Why is Tony asking Jack? Who’s Tony? Who’s Jack?

And why doesn’t Tony know why Broowaha’s then No 2 Producer left?

How did Morgana, the then Number 2 producer, simply put it here? Something along, “Ass, gas, grass, sass, or equivalence’s, I don’t play for free.” What is so hard in understanding that? Who buys or buys into a business than don’t bother to keep happy their Top Producers? None of you investors here, that’s what you are aren’t you you secretive pack. Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John? None of you could come up with any ass, gas, grass, sass, or equivalence’s to keep Morgana playing here? Any? Guess not if you can’t even give her a Broo shirt promised months ago, and then make another goof referring to her as “he.” Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John, you don’t even know who your Top Producers are? How is that possible?

Somebody now needs to get neighborly real fast here don’t you think? There is a lot of work ahead for many to get back to the awesome momentum, style, intellectualism, soul, class, openness, and heart of what the Broo neighborhood Tom Lewis, Alan Handwerger, Jack Bates, Tony Berkman, and John bought was then.

As for the imprudent “The Broo Writers” aka The Broo Police aka The Broo Guardhouse aka The Broo Neighborhood Association, I have this further to say to you. Mind your own business. My Reno Broo neighborhood here has no Broo Police. My Reno Broo neighborhood here has no Broo Guardhouse. My Reno Broo neighborhood here has no Broo Neighborhood Association. We have none because without authority or legality, which none of this have, that makes them all simple Control Freak.

A Control Freak makes other people’s business their business. What are you, a bunch of Control Freak, anti-Free Speechers, anti-Free Associators, trying to tell me what I can and cannot write here, and who I can and cannot associate with here? How dare you! When I decide to come into my neighborhood here, my neighborhood is Reno Broowaha, and leave a message for three of my neighbors here, my Reno neighbors, it is none of your damn business that I did. Here’s the point. Reno Broowaha is a neighborhood here and I will act as a good neighbor and demand the same neighborly behavior from others here. If you decide to act as an adult, a responsible adult with something constructive or even witty to say, feel free to join my discussions here with my neighbors. Stop your illegal attempts to limit my constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech and association. Stop your illegal attacks on me. Stop illegally writing me I cannot leave three of my neighbors a message here. Yes, I can. Stop being a Control Freak, be a better neighbor, stop trying to control and dominate me, and stop making my constitutionally protected business your business. Is that clear enough for you?

"Yes, what did happen to Reno Broo? And LA Broo? And San Francisco Broo? And the other city editions?" Lucy asks here. Again and still no answer from this New Broo for what happened to the city editions. This New Broo did arrogantly stab Reno here in the back. Bill Friday wrote that, "Does anyone else love seeing their name in print? But I digress.

It's true that, as the local editions became a thing of the past, the one that suffered the most because of it was Reno. While the Los Angeles edition had a quirky feel that could only come from a "city" big enough to boast of 10 million or so residents spread over a 250 square mile area, Reno had its quirk down to an art. Where L.A. Broo was most like the backtories in a Tarrantino film, Reno was more like the lovechild of David Lynch and John Waters... with a little Ed Wood tossed in for giggles.

No matter what came out of the Reno edition, you just couldn't not look.

And while those days are gone, the evidence remains... for those who look."

So far the evidence remains but, the ominous and illegal trend is looking like it's all gonna be removed. I've had my Reno Broowaha articles here changed by Broowaha after I've submitted it. Broowaha changed my articles for the worse. I've seen comments removed -- even on my stuff. I've seen accounts here deleted and removed that the account didn't want deleted or removed. Broother immediately comes to mind on my Hey, Can We Really Do That With Fountainhead? I've asked here New Broo several times why Broother was removed. Broother's comment on my article was spot on and respectful and pertinent!! No explanation. None given for why Broother was "disappeared" from here.

Is Your Website Owner a Patriot or A Terrorist? In Cyberspace, the First Amendment is a local ordinance. Asking if web site owners, or owners, is or are a patriot or a terrorist is a valid question because an open and free media is essential to democracy. The Internet is a common area, a public space like any village square. So far, it is the largest common area that has ever existed. Anything that anybody wishes to say can be heard by anyone else with access to the Internet, and this world-wide community is as large and diverse as humanity itself. Therefore, from a practical point of view, no one community's standards can govern the type of speech permissible on the Internet. In the words of John Barlow, a founding member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) -- "In Cyberspace, the First Amendment is a local ordinance".

Broowaha, what is this gobblygook in my stats?!

At least Ariel and David knew what they were doing here. NO website owner can set up rules that overtly or covertly violate the United States Constitution, or any America’s state’s constitution. In America, no website owner can require overtly or covertly that a user must give up any of their civil rights to participate on a site.

@Marga- BrooWaha has been experiencing a server attact that has caused a number of front page features to stop updating. BrooWaha management is aware of the problem and is working to resolve it.

You are dead wrong about "traitors and patriots". A website pulbisher has ABSOLUTE discretion to publish or not publish anything that he or she chooses to.

And why, pray would you even EXPECT management to notice or respond to a "comment" on a thread that is more than a year old? (Particularly since the front page comment viewer is broken and they are a bit busy fending off cyber-terrorist attack on their site?)
