Lakers Deserve Win. L. A. Doesn't

Celebration marred by stupidity and immaturity...as usual.

What is it about the Lakers winning the NBA championship that makes the people of L.A. into a bunch of stupid morons?

This time, the Lakers weren’t even in the same time zone as Los Angeles and their win caused the people of Los Angeles to O.D. on stupid.  Why is it that you can’t get more than two or three hundred Angelinos together without having it turn into a full-on riot?  Is it because the there’s too much crap in the air that they can’t breathe and so they have to set everything on fire and make it worse?

In 2000, the Lakers won the NBA championship and the downtown area around Staples Center turned into fricking Beirut!  There were bonfires all over the place, an LAPD cruiser got torched and businesses were looted.

The only act of class that came out of that entire evening was when Shaquille O’Neal voluntarily donated $50,000 of his own money to the City of Los Angeles to replace that one torched police car.  He didn’t have to do that, but because Shaq is a nice guy, he hoped that his act of kindness would permeate the city.

Yeah, right.  It’s no wonder he got the hell out of town when he had the chance.  This place isn’t worth it.

Then here it is nine years later, the Lakers are up against the Orlando Magic, playing at Amway Arena in Orlando, the Lakers win the tournament making Phil Jackson the winningest NBA coach on the planet and what do Lakers fans do?  Set bonfires, trash a police cruiser and loot businesses.

What a bunch of stupid morons.

I’m happy for Phil and the boys.  I’m glad that Phil now has the most wins as an NBA coach.  I’m even moderately okay with the idea of Kobe Bryant being named the MVP of the tournament.

But the City of Los Angeles doesn’t deserve it.

If the people of Los Angeles can’t be any better behaved when the Lakers win, it’s no damn wonder the NFL won’t allow anyone to put a franchise here.  If I owned an NFL team, I wouldn’t put them in L.A. either!

There’s too many gang-bangers in L.A. who have stolen the Lakers identity to use as their own to make keeping the team in town.  The whole reason the Staples Center was built was to move the Lakers out of the Forum and Inglewood – a part of town where it’s only safe to go through there at night if you’re a bullet!  Unfortunately, the scumbags who can’t control themselves slithered out of Inglewood and made their way to downtown and had to go and ruin it for everyone else.

Then there’s East L.A.  For a whole mile, Whittier Boulevard was closed down because people swarmed the street to celebrate.  But the video shown on the news tonight was of vandals trying to overturn cars in the road.  Somewhere along the line, a news helicopter camera recorded some idiot throwing a trashcan into the front window of a Robek’s, smashing the window and allowing people to get inside and take whatever they wanted.

Talk about a bunch of sore winners.

Los Angeles doesn’t deserve a class act such as the Lakers.  Maybe the Lakers ought to move to someplace that will celebrate with them without turning the city into a war zone.

Or maybe, Los Angeles needs to just grow up and act like civilized human beings instead of a bunch of two-year-olds.

Ed, I don't miss LA either, but unfortunately, unlike you, I still reside here!

You are so spot-on about the negatives. But you forgot to mention one rather glaring problem- lack of leadership in city goverance: His Mayoral Invisibleness, Antonio Villaraigosa.

Talk about lack of leadership! The man spends more time anywhere else than here (he's spent pretty much his entire term focusing on his upcoming gubernatorial bid, not to mention his patheticly transparent affair with Telemundo reporter Mirthala Salinas), so small wonder that local citizens behave badly. To whom do they have to look upon as an example?
