Haters Have Fun At Honest Persons' Expense

The feeling of safety within a community can be easily disrupted when there is no system of accounability

A "Hater" has just left a series of anonymous reviews of a number of my articles here on the Broo all within a short span of time, each with markedly lower across-the-board scores than the  previous reviews that have been posted by folks who did not see the need to conceal their identities...

So I guess this is yet another strategy for dishonest people and their minions to propel their own articles up higher in the ratings. So much easier to diss the talents of others than to hone one's own skills.

I guess this is someone's idea of a good time. All I can say is what a pity they don't have something constructive to do with their lives. At least I can always write another worthwhile article for others to enjoy. Until of course the Haters diss that one and lower its ratings as well.

Thus is the sword of democracy double-edged. It would certainly be a lot more fair for everyone if reviews were similar to comments in that the creator would be identifiable and held accountable.

I have already filed two abuse reports to the Powers-That-Be here. If it is decided that the current system will remain in place, I unfortunately feel that I will have no alternative but to resign from the Broo, and that would sadden me indeed.

If anyone else has had a similar experience and has any ideas of how to remedy this abuse, I'd love to hear from you. Thank you kindly to those of you who have offered constructive criticism of my work.

I never take it amiss when someone has something valid to say, but anonymously generated bogus reviews are not among what I consider constructive.

This article sucks! You should be flogged!!! :)

Ok, that was my attempt at humor, to lighten the mood. I don't understand why people feel the need to down vote as it is classified elsewhere, and it doesn't make sense that it should carry over to here. My feeling is that in general, you should ignore the critics, and move on, because some people believe Sturgeon's Law to be in full force, they have to find something wrong with what they're currently perusing, in order to feel good about themselves, as they don't recognize brilliance when it's staring them in the face....

Apparently one of the reasons that people abuse the ratings system on the Broo is to leverage their so-called popularity for personal and/or professional gain. I will call this the "Tila Tequila Syndrome".

(For those who don't know, Tila Tequila, a cute model and a not terribly talented musician, has made a name for herself as "The Most Popular Girl On MySpace", for the simple reason that she availed herself of friend-adding software before anyone else did, and then leveraged this "proof of popularity" in the mainstream and alternative press in order to make herself a celebrity.)

In our "Cult of Personality" society, being popular is a tangible way to profit either professionally, or with the (deluded) personal satisfaction that one MUST be "somebody" because of one's notoriety.

Another nobody who leveraged himself into somebodyhood in a similar way as Ms. Tequila is Jeffree Star. Google "him" and you'll see what I mean. Fame for the sake of fame, based on the intangible...Whatever!

OMG! I wasn't around here much in 2008, as I was working on my Polka Haunt Us Recording practically 24/7. I didn't know that El G had been given the boot. He was one of my main reasons for being on the Broo! This pretty much clinches my impulse to cease participating here and move on...

This also confirms my suspicion that this is not my native planet and these are not my people. Scotty- PUH-LEEZ beam me up!

It's interesting to me that the anonymous down voting continue today, 1 1/2 years after Veronique wrote this. It does seem cowardly to me. And I am highly inclined to agree that the ratings should simply be done away with. Everybody has a mailbox on here if you want to talk with someone about what they wrote. Why NOT just get rid of the ratings, the reviews and the anonumous commentaries?

As I just have gotten started am I already in need of a raft and life jacket? Bill Friday was one of two people who kindly introduced themselves to welcome me to Broo! I would hate to think that there would actually be an interest in 'beating up' writers with words that impact scores and ratings. It's neat to follow the popularity contest but I am like Bill. I enjoy reviewing the page count and also look to see if there are comments or if there are questions I am also happy to answer.

Veronique, I am glad you shared this news and am glad to read these comments. I, too would like to think that Broo could truly be a voice of the people/citizens. The concept is terrific. But as with all products and services, management and customer service remain critical to any success.

No voting to prevent manipulating popularity? Sounds fine to me. :)
