J B • GROUP Classic Pioneers Star studded World Team Challenge for 2009.

The JB Group along with The Hong Kong Tennis Patron’s Association (TPA) proudly announced J B · GROUP Classic tennis tournament to be held in Hong Kong from 7th – 10th Jan’09.

The J B · GROUP Classic will feature four teams from the regions of Europe, Russia, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. Each team will consist of three players who will compete in singles and doubles and will be led by a global star player. Recently crowned World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic from Serbia will head up Team Europe and play in Hong Kong for the first time. Returning to Hong Kong to lead the Americas is 2008 Wimbledon Singles & Doubles Champion and 7 time Grand Slam Champion Venus Williams, while 2008 Australian Open Champion Maria Sharapova will spearhead Russia. Indian Superstar Sania Mirza will compete for Asia-Pacific.   The four teams will be placed into a semi final draw with each tie consisting of singles and doubles matches. The teams with the most overall wins will proceed to the J B Gold Group Final and the losers to the J B Silver Group Final.   The J B · GROUP Classic World Team Challenge follows in the tradition of other established international team events such as the Hopman Cup and the ATP World Team Cup.

With the introduction of this new concept, the J B · GROUP announced it would continue its title sponsorship for a further 2 years through 2010, underlying the pedigree of the Hong Kong Event. Mr Jatin Chutke, President, J B · GROUP Corporate Management stated, “We are delighted to continue as title sponsors of the J B · GROUP Classic. We look forward to another high quality tournament. The J B · GROUP Classic World Team Challenge is new to Hong Kong and will provide tennis fans with a very exciting team dynamic, especially after the overwhelming success of the Olympics which is essentially a team event.”

Mr. Bhupen Surani, Chairman, J B · GROUP said, “J B · GROUP is proud to be supporting this community event and we are happy we can contribute to the growth and success of the Tournament.”

Commenting on the line up for the 2009 event, Mr. Ian Wade, President of the Hong Kong Tennis Patrons’ Association remarked, “We are delighted to be inviting tennis stars who represent every corner of the World and are thrilled that World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic is spearheading Team Europe. Jelena is one of the most popular and talented players on tour and a fierce competitor. She currently leads the WTA Tour Race and has won more matches than any other female player this year.

Leading Team Americas is J B · GROUP Classic defending champion and recent Olympic Doubles Gold Medallist Venus Williams, returning to Hong Kong for the 6th time. She is a true icon of tennis. We are also very pleased to invite back global superstar Maria Sharapova, to head up Team Russia. Maria is the world’s most recognizable female athlete and a triple Grand Slam Champion after capturing this year’s Australian Open. Team Asia-Pacific will be represented by Indian Superstar Sania Mirza, a very popular player in Hong Kong who has a huge Indian fan base. Sania’s colourful personality and powerful game makes her one of the most entertaining players on Tour.”

The remaining field will be announced later in the year.

Mr. Wade remarked, “We have a global event with a global theme and global stars. The concept has changed, but fans can still see the same big stars that they have come to expect in Hong Kong. The J B · GROUP Classic will be even bigger and better next year.”

The J B · GROUP Classic will be held from January 7th to the 10th, 2009 at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium.
