Rock & Roll Hall Of Shame

by J.D. Howard (writer), Los Angeles, September 27, 2008

Long live Rock

In the wake of last year’s monumental insult of Madonna’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Einstein’s at the Hall are at it again. Among this year’s proposed inductees are Run-DMC, and the 1970’s group “Chic.” The Hip-Hop and Disco products of both these groups are the very antithesis of Rock & Roll. Their induction should be considered a travesty especially when bands and artists who have contributed so much to the very fabric of Rock & Roll over many years are regularly over-looked by the politically corrupt keepers of the Hall of Shame.

The powers-that-be who are behind the franchise driven, corporate manufactured techno-garbage that has been passed off as music in recent years have forgone the notion of talent and hard work. It’s obvious that their only motivation is the greed of chart position and advertising dollars, and I’m tired of watching real musicians being pushed aside in favor of the insult that is the American Idol fantasy. I suppose the next logical step is to give Lifetime Achievement Awards to Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Jessica Simpson. I’m so glad Britney’s career is back on track with her multiple wins at the recent VMA Awards. All she had to do to reclaim her Top10 status was to abandon her own children and stop eating at Taco Bell. I can’t tell you how proud I am to know that she’s the role model for so many young girls who look to her for the very blueprint for success. Maybe it’s not such a coincidence that her initials are B.S.

Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Buddy Holly, John Lennon, and Alan Freed among many others, would puke if they could see what has happened to the legacy that they fought so hard to keep intact for future generations of real artists to enjoy.

Rock & Roll, indeed.

I agree, the idea of actually having a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame seems very silly.  Like Jimi Hendrix' career isn't validated if he isn't enshrined in Cleveland's hallowed halls.  Who has the energy to be irate over Madonna or Run-DMC getting in?

The concert they have every year at the induction ceremony is always a screeching clusterfuck, with at least 15 guitarists looking left and right to see which one of them is out of tune, or even plugged in; 5 drummers all playing the same beat; and last but not least, Bruce Springsteen singing backup vocals with his constipation-faced bad harmony.

Monumental insult?  Travesty?  Hardly...
