They Eat Their Young! They Eat Their Young!

by slowasigo (writer), Newland and Ellis, August 31, 2008

After the election buttons and placards of the 2000 presidential contest had decomposed in the landfills of America, pollsters vigorously dissected the results to find a spoiler other than Bush, the recount or the Supreme Court decision.  It was widely reported that Ralph Nader had siphoned off votes that would have given the Al Gore the presidency.  2,992,955 people voted for Nader. This is how the numbers would have broken down had he not been on the ballot.

1,326,159 (46%) would have picked Gore
893,716 (31%) would have sat out the election.
663,080 (23%) would have favored Bush.

How did this affect the outcome of the election?  Votes cast for Nader cost Gore Florida, New Hampshire and could have decided outcomes in as many as 6 other states.

Two months after Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign she and her supporters continue to portray a spoiler mentality.  Her husband, at the convention, made remarks that seem to suggest the electorate made a big mistake. Over 1000 supporters worked actively to get a symbolic vote on the floor of the convention so that they could show their continued support for Hillary.

One senior Obama supporter said the Clinton associates act like “Japanese soldiers in the South Pacific still fighting after the war is over.”

The Democratic Party had hoped that the days of the convention would help heal the party and unify the message.  That has not happened.   The BBC reported that following the first day of the Democratic National Convention, 25% of those democrats who initially voted for Hillary Clinton had decided to vote for John McCain.

Barack Obama has a near impossible job. There is very little that binds the Democratic Electorate as a cohesive body.  The party fragments easily.  Moreover, it fragments spitefully. James Carville, Democratic strategist and loyal Clinton advisor,  continues to harp on Barack’s inability to win.  Media mogul, Paul Colichman, publicly denounced Obama’s position on gay marriage and said he would not be voting for him.  It was reported during the convention that Bill Clinton, the patriarchal head of the Democratic Party, would not be attending Obama’s keynote speech.

With such infighting does it matter who runs against Barack? Swiftboat Veterans for Truth have nothing on the Democratic Party.  The democrats are sure to, once again, consume themselves and hand another man the keys to the White House.

I for one hope that people that are trying to be "spoilers" realize how hypocritical that is. This election is too important to just hand to the Republicans again. If anyone who voted for Hillary thinks that voting for McCain is a just punishment for their candidate losing, they are only punishing themselves.

Hypocritical to be sure.  We have no one to blame but ourselves when we CHOOSE to use our vote for any other purpose than change.

Thanks

Gallo... says it best! This country needs a viable third party to save our democracy. The two current parties are so weighed by their failures and bullshit that true change can only come with the fresh perspective a third party would bring to the party. One can only hope.

I am a woman and I didn't support Hillary because I didn't agree that she was the best candidate. Most women that did want her to be president must have believed in what she stood for, ie equal women's rights/right to choose, etc., so it just doesn't make sense that they would go for McCain when he doesn't support equal pay for women or the right to choose. Don't vote for Obama if you feel disenfranchised but voting for McCain is not the answer.

But neither is not voting at all.  People have the right to vote for whomever they want.  Those who "choose" not to vote are the ones who get my Irish up.  When you vote, you have a say in how the government is going to be run.  If you don't vote, you are throwing up your hands and saying, "I don't care what happens so long as it doesn't affect me."  The nice thing about voting is that if your candidate loses, you have the right to bitch about how poorly the winner is doing and then you have the right to work harder to ensure that your candidate wins next time.

Frankly, I hope McCain does win.  I can't bear the thought of putting someone in the White House who is a viable contender for the lead role in Clueless 2.

You are right, not voting is not the answer. But to vote for a candidate that will put into effect policies that go against what you want for this country is a punishment to yourself.
