Oh, boy. Mexican rental cars

I have always loved renting cars in Mexico. I get weak kneed just thinking about them. Rent a car there and you instantly have a off-road racing vehicle. I don't care who you rent it from, Avis, Budget, Hertz, it matters not. Just pick one up in any major Mexican city and you can take it anywhere you please. There are no restrictions.

When I travel by car in Mexico I have a few basic rules. First, do not plan anything more than 12 hours ahead, and leave yourself ample time to return home ( I found a week after you were expected is a "good rule of thumb".) Second, if you see a side road either dirt or paved, and you even think it will take you to a beach, turn immediately. Don't worry there are always people coming and going from la playa. Third, have enough food and water and whatever else you deem important to last a few days. Fourth, be fearless, go anywhere, eat anything, just make sure you see someone else eat some first.

Here is some advice on the do's and don'ts of "aliquiler de carros" (car rental) in Mexico. DO NOT rent VW bugs, they are too cramped for any real scenic rural road traveling and they don't handle the "washboard roads" very well. I have had them literally shake apart and having to stop and pick up the parts becomes a pain. The rental agency will expect you to return all the pieces. DO rent the biggest car you can find, the most powerful one available in compact or midsize. Double occupancy is a plus. Absolutely DO purchase any additional insurance offered. DO NOT under any circumstance put any dents in the car. You can break axles, blow up the engine, have the transmission fall out, and the rental agency will pay for it. If you put a dent the size of a quarter in the car you will be asked to pony up. However, If you bought the extra insurance everything is sweet. Life is good.
