Hot Latin Music at AT&T Fiesta Broadway
The streets of downtown Los Angeles were filled with people in town for the annual AT&T Fiesta Broadway presented by State Farm Insurance. This was a huge street party celebrating Cinco de Mayo on over 36 square city blocks. The streets were lined up with vendors, some of whom were major sponsors of Fiesta Broadway. There were tons of give-aways; an equal amount of information was also handed out. Most importantly, sprinkled throughout the festival grounds were the booths featuring a non-partisan, Hispanic voter-registration campaign with the theme “Vote For Your Future/Vota Para Tu Futuro.” The participating organizations staffing the voter education booths included Telemundo, the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials, the League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Rock The Vote, and United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI). According to a recent report that was published in today’s newspapers (April 29th), “Immigrants and their children could make up 29th percent of the electorates in California by the year 2012. This study was release by the non profit GrantMakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees based in Sebastopol.”
There were conflicting reports released on how many people were in attendance to enjoy this years Fiesta Broadway. One report stated 150,000 and another said it was 400,000. These numbers were well below the anticipated 500,000 that were expected. The scorching hot weather might have been one of the contributing factors, or perhaps other events such as the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival might have also cut into the numbers. Never the less a fun time was had by all.
Musical acts performed on one of the four main stages and on a small stage on Broadway and 8th street. I considered myself lucky to see and get a photograph of Cuban bombshell Niurka Marcos on the State Farm Insurance/KWHY-TV22 Stage on 1st and Broadway.
Last year MTV Tr3s brought a powerful and youthful presence to the 18th Annual Fiesta Broadway with amazing performances by Calle 13, Jennifer Pena, Reik, Malverde, and Ozomatli that brought out record crowds of young people for the first time in many years. MTV Tr3s took the show up a notch and turned up the volume on the Latin pop and urban sounds bringing to the 19th Annual AT&T Fiesta Broadway presented by State Farm Insurance performances by hugely popular artists to its powerful line up to their stage on the corner of 7th and Hill. The crowd were jumping to the pumped up sounds of reggaeton artist Tony Dize, Mexican American duo Prima J, the West coast Mexican poetic hip-hop artist Malverde, Latin and urban influenced pop crossover act Kat De Luna, special guest artist Pee Wee introduced kumbia pop artist Cruz Martinez y Los Super Reyes. Headliners were the Latin Grammy nominated reggaeton duo of Wisin Y Yandell(pictured). The crowd enjoyed an entire day of exciting and great musical line up.
