When Oklahoma ’s State Representative Sally Kern was recently recorded while making several statements like, "Gay's are worst than terrorists," to a private assembly of fifty conservative republicans speaking about her views of the Gay community, she created a public outcry.
If Sally Kern studied World History, then she would have known her actions are very similar to what Hitler did when he created the Nazi Party. According to the international 2007 Hate Crime Survey by the Human Rights First organization, "Bias crimes motivated by sexual orientation, like those motivated by Antisemitism, have antecedents in the Holocaust. Nazi campaigns to exterminate Jew, Roma and Sinti were accompanied by a program called "Operation T4" designed to annihilate the disabled, persecute and murder tens of thousands of Europeans identified as homosexuals. Although the gay community is no longer forced to wear pink triangles..., sexual orientation is still a bias for stigmatization and oppression, often with the open support of government at some level and by influential political and religious organizations."
The 2006 FBI Hate Crime Statistics show an 18% increase in hate crimes against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Well it is no wonder, when politicians like Sally Kern are spewing hate rhetoric such as, "The homosexual agenda is destroying this nation. It's it's it's not a lifestyle that is good for this nation."
Wait just a minute. The Gay community is not the scapegoat for the Republican Party, nor are they to blame for the high United States Divorce Rate. Conservative Republicans have had control of the White House for the last eight years, so let’s take a brief overview of where America stands today: Looming Recession- we are still paying for and participating in the 5+ year war. The US is the only western nation that does not have a national health care plan. The American Dollar is at a 40% drop for the first time in a 30 year history against the Canadian Dollar. We have alienated most of the free world that once respected us. Gasoline is at a high of almost $4.00 a gallon and an entree on a menu or meat at the grocery store is more than minimum wage $5.25-$8.25. It is the first time in US history that a citizen can work for minimum wage and be below the national poverty level. Cost of living increases, while wages decrease. Hmmm. And the Bush Administration wants to eliminate the Clean Air Act when the United States, with only four percent of the world’s population, is responsible for 22% of the world’s green house gas emissions. I think Sally Kern is confused about who is really destroying the nation.
The Government has become two powerful Corporate bodies fighting over who gets to control citizens tax dollars and 'we the people,' gay or straight are paying the ultimate price in terms of our quality of life. The word on the street is that many citizens think they are being ignored by our countries leaders. Having a politician like Sally Kern divide us into 'good-straight people' and 'bad-gay people' categories is not going to help solve our nation’s problems. We have to work together as a team to create solutions.
Yes, the LGBT community have begun fighting to claim their constitutional rights; the right to civil liberties that prevent them from being murdered due to Hate Crimes. The Hate Crimes bill was known as the Matthew Shephard Act, and after a seven year battle the bill was approved by the House and Senate until it died in Conference on December of 2007. Take note Sally, no LGBT organization or group has passed anti-heterosexual legislation anywhere in the United States . The 'gay community' is not running around beating and killing straight people for um, being heterosexual and wanting to marry and have babies. Do you know why? The LGBT community loves our 'heterosexual family and friends' because without you, the gay community would not be here. Instead of wasting our time hating, we express ourselves creatively; we decorate houses, do fabulous make up and hair, create fashion must-haves and infiltrate the entertainment, medical, legal and business communities with our humorous and witty ideas. Demonstrating through loving example and non-violent behavior that we can 'rise above' political and religious discrimination with a smile. Even while the conservative right wing Groups have pushed and passed more laws and legislation against the gay community on a national level denying us our civil liberties. So truthfully Sally, who has the real agenda?
When a government leader spews venom toward the LGBT community it fuels a domino effect that also creates consequences for our youth. In high school, I remember when my childhood friend Adrean decided to come out to his parents and tell them he was gay. In response, his parents withdrew him from school, packed his belongings over the weekend and flew him across the country to a Psych ward in Mexico to cure and reverse his 'gay illness.' According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 26% of gay teens who come out to their parents / guardians are told to leave home. Out of the 1.6 Million Homeless Youth, 42% identify themselves as Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual or Transgender (LGBT). Suicide is higher among gay teens because society does not create an atmosphere of dignity or respect. Government officials like Sally Kern only make the situation worse by promoting hatred towards the gay community.
Sally also stated to her private group of friends, "Not everyone’s lifestyle is equal, just like not all religions are equal." Ms. Kern obviously likes to ignore history, like the Declaration of Independence and the reasons our forefathers divorced the mother country to create constitutional laws separating church and state. However, perhaps she remembers the Pledge of Allegiance, when we each stood before the American flag, placed a hand over our heart and gave our spoken word;
"One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Now there is a petition that can help create such a possibility for the LGBT community;
