Need a New Wardrobe? Here’s What You Should Do

Some new pieces of clothing that better fit your personal style, check out these tips:

If you’re still holding on to clothes from high school, it’s high time that you got yourself a new wardrobe. Even if you have updated your closet a few times since graduation, as seasons change, personal tastes evolve, or you shift careers, you may find yourself in need of a whole new wardrobe to meet the occasion. A new wardrobe doesn’t always come cheaply, though, and even if you’re an Australian fashion designer, you may have a hard time finding pieces that are perfectly you. So, how can you ensure that you get a wardrobe that makes you look and feel great without breaking the bank?

Before you head out and buy everything that catches your eye, maxing out those credit cards to get some new outfits for your new job or some new pieces of clothing that better fit your personal style, check out these tips:

Set a Budget

A new wardrobe can cost a lot of money, so it’s important that you set a budget that will allow you to get the items you need without breaking the bank. The average cost per item will depend on the type of pieces you’re shopping for and where you choose to buy them. For this person who had to buy a whole new wardrobe after losing weight, the average cost per item was $38.76; however, they chose to purchase as many recycled items as possible—if you’re buying everything brand new, you might want to budget for your costs to be higher.

Decide What Look You’re Going For

Once you have a budget set, you’ll need to decide what kind of look you’re going for. Do you want more business clothes? A business casual look? A summer wardrobe for a hot new climate?

There are a lot of different clothing styles out there, and there’s no right or wrong choice for you—ultimately you have to choose what suits your personal style and your lifestyle best. You’re not restricted to one look, though, it’s okay to mix and match different styles so that you can change up your look to fit different occasions.

Know What You Like

Even within a certain genre of clothing, there are different things that you’ll like and won’t like. For example, if you’re going for a preppy look, you may like a lot of the tops but hate wearing dresses, or you may prefer pants to shorts. Knowing what types of pieces and styles you like, even within a specific type of clothing group is important since you don’t want to waste any time or money on something you’ll end up only wearing a couple of times.

Figure Out What Looks Best on Your Body Type

There are all different kinds of body types out there, and your body type is nothing to be embarrassed about. While someone might have a more slim, straight body type, another might have a curvier figure. Whatever you’ve got, you shouldn’t hide it; you can find clothing that accentuates it well. Once you’ve figured out what your body type is, you’ll know what type of clothing will look best on you, showing off your great features and helping you feel confident.

Look for Pieces that Can be Mixed and Matched

A great way to save money and ensure that you have outfits for days is to find pieces that complement each other and can be mixed and matched easily. Choosing patterned tops, blazers, and brightly colored patterned pants, none of which can go together, is not a good idea. Neutral pants that can be worn with multiple different tops and a variety of shirts that add color and style but can be worn with other pieces will give you a more diverse wardrobe, more outfit options, and help you save more money in the process.

Don’t Forget about Shoes

Shoes are an important part of any wardrobe—they can add to, (or detract from), an ensemble. Unfortunately, they can also be quite pricey, so you may have to get strategic. Make sure that you have your basic needs, (tennis shoes, dress shoes, and a comfortable pair you can wear anywhere), before purchasing anything else, but once you’ve got the basics under control, you can start looking for other shoes and styles that will add to the pieces you’ve purchased.

You’ll Want to Leave Room in Your Budget for Accessories Too

Finally, you don’t want to forget about accessories. Like shoes, accessories can bring an entire outfit together. Even if it’s as simple as a watch, or as dazzling as a necklace and set of earrings, you’ll want to make sure that you leave room in your budget to purchase some new accessories to top off your new look and tie it all together.

What has you considering a whole new wardrobe?
