What is garcinia cambogia and its effects?

Garcinia cambogia is a product which enables to lose weight in a short period of time. This product is greatly used by many and continues to be ameliorated in order to give better results.

History of garcinia

Not less than 180 species of garcinia grow in tropical Asia, Africa and Polynesia, of which only 30 in India. In some areas of the country, an edible vegetable oil is extracted from the Garcinia cambogia seed. The bark of the fruit is used to prepare a seasoning used in Indian and Thai food. This preparation is a substitute for tamarind (Tamarindus indica), used as a condiment. The bark, administered as a decoction, is used to treat rheumatism and gastrointestinal disorders. In veterinary medicine, this decoction is used to treat oral diseases.

Analysis of garcinia cambogia

Some studies indicate that one of the most active ingredients in garcinia, hydroxycitric acid (HCA) inhibits the action of an enzyme essential for fat synthesis. This substance is therefore able to prevent the storage of fat in the body, especially the patient follows a high carbohydrate diet.

Since 2004, analysis are still done on the garcinia cambogia and according to the statistics, garcinia cambogia is promising. Tests have been done on human beings and animals for about 12 weeks and the results were somehow satisfactory. However, some of the results were inconclusive but it is certainly due to the consumption of a high-fiber diet, consumption done during the test.

After this study, other studies have been made and were at least more satisfactory than the previous ones. The different cases considerably lost weight as it was intended but out of about 400 cases, 12 to 14 somehow gave inconclusive results. However, the rest of the cases largely proved the importance of this product for in order to lose weight in a very short period of time and this treatment must be accompanied by a rich diet in order to apply more efficiency. PrecautionsWarning
Do not confuse the bark extract of Garcinia cambogia seeds with the resin of Garcinia hanburyi, which is a powerful laxative with marked side effects and which is able to cause some deaths.

Mixed products with garcinia cambogia

Two cases of rhabdomyolysis, a condition that can cause serious and irreversible muscle damage, have been reported in people who have been taking supplements containing garcinia and other ingredients, including caffeine. This adverse reaction appears to be attributable to the caffeine contained in the products used.

Two cases of liver damage have been reported following the use of a product that claims to promote rapid weight loss (Hydroxycut). This contained garcinia and several other components. The causal link has not been clearly established.

Pregnancy and breast feeding

Since the studies on garcinia have not yet been completed, it is recommended not to take the plant during pregnancy and lactation.

Other effects

The only adverse effects observed in the studies are mild and transient: headache, diarrhea, flatulence.

Garcinia cambogia, through many studies, has proven its effectiveness on both human beings and animals. This product has the capacity of contributing to the loss of weight, especially when it is accompanied by a very rich diet. Garcinai cambogia still goes through some studies for more details.
