Underrated: Ways To Protect Your Eyes

by johnkelvin318 (writer), , June 11, 2018

Here are some things you can do to protect your eyes better than you already are.

Good vision is something that many people take for granted. Even those with prescription glasses or contacts have a lot to be thankful for. Sight is one of, if not the most, amazing sense there is, and we should safeguard it with everything we have. Permanent damage to our eyes can happen over long periods of exposure to harsh elements. Consider all of the activities you currently enjoy doing that you wouldn’t be able to experience fully without the sight that you have now. Could you drive a car? Watch a movie? Read a book? Work? Probably not. For something so delicate, we don’t actively do much to make sure it’s a sense that stays sharp for as long as possible. Here are some things you can do to protect your eyes better than you already are.

Quit smoking or never start

There have been many studies that show the correlation of smoking with macular degeneration. Smoking is something that everyone has some level of control over. For being the leading cause of disease in the country, way too many people choose to pick up on the bad habit. Over time, smoking impacts every organ in your body, including your eyes.

Eat a balanced diet

Recommended not just for your eyes, but also for your overall health, eating a healthy diet is another easy way to protect yourself. Studies show that foods rich in antioxidants can decrease your risk of obtaining cataracts. You can find such elements in fruits and vegetables. Also, foods with omega-3 fatty acids are considered to be healthy eye foods. They help decrease your risk of developing macular degeneration. Foods with omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, chia seeds, flaxseed, and walnuts.

Squeeze in some workouts

Working out is always a good thing to a certain degree. Your body needs to keep moving in able to operate properly. Getting your heart pumping, skin sweating, and your muscles working are great ways to keep fit, but also keep your eye health in check. Studies show that even walking can help prevent developing conditions like macular degeneration. Plus, it’s a win-win because you always feel great after a good workout.

Beware of computer screens

If you haven’t heard about it before, you’ve probably felt the short-term effects of staring at a smart phone, laptop, or tablet for too long. Your eyes start to feel dry, sore, tired, and you can even develop some pretty harsh headaches. These symptoms come from your eyes taking in too much blue light in a short period of time. Blue light can also be found in the sun and other sources of light, but those aren’t as close to your eyes and aren’t stared out for stretched out periods of time. Products like Pixel computer glasses can help to protect your eyes from the harmful blue light. They filter out 50% of the blue light and block over 95% of the wavelengths, while still keeping it stylish.

Wear sunglasses with UV protection

The summer is the time when your eyes are exposed to the most UV light. Even though you aren’t going to be staring straight into the sun while you’re lying on the beach, the rays reflect off things like the water and sand, hitting your eyes indirectly. For this reason, the best thing you can do for your eyes when you’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time is wearing sunglasses with complete UV protection. Long-term exposure without the protection can lead to cataracts or a condition commonly known as “snow blindness”.

Drink plenty of water

This is especially true for the hot summer months. If your body starts to feel the symptoms of dehydration, one of the first things to go is the body’s tear production. This can lead to excessively dry eyes and ultimately more serious complications.
