First and foremost, if you don’t already belong to a gym, you should signup as soon as possible. There are gyms in pretty much every town, including major cities where gyms like Brick Los Angeles are located. Gyms offer a ton of services beside the obvious workout facilities. Most have personal trainers, group fitness classes, nutrition consultations, and even in-house juice bars for post-workout snacks. Former couch potatoes can thrive in the gym atmosphere if you just get the motivation to begin. Getting into the specifics of how to get in shape this summer: Here are 5 tips on how to see success before the bikini season commences.
Teach yourself portion control
First and foremost, you need to learn how to read the nutrition labels on food. You need to pay attention to calories, fat, carbs, sugar, protein, fiber, and other factors that make up the food, but the most forgotten aspect of the label is the serving size. If the bag of veggie chips says that there’s just 100 calories per servings, you might think, “okay these are healthy”, and before you know it, the whole bag is gone. You forgot to read the part that said there were 8 servings in the bag, so you just consumed a total of 800 calories. Portion control is also important for meals as well as eating out. Salads aren’t as healthy as they seem, so beware!
Find a workout that you love to do
Workouts are never going to be sustainable if you don’t enjoy doing them. Running certainly isn’t for everyone, so if you’re one of those people, try out some different things. Running isn’t the only way to burn calories. You can bike; lift weights, swim, and row, use the elliptical, hike, rock climb etc. If you’re trying to figure out what really gets you doing, it might be a good idea to join some group classes at your gym. This way you can try out different things and figure out what you like and dislike.
Be realistic and sustainable
Fad diets are going to make you lose weight for a week, but once you go back to eating the way you were before, you’re going to gain it all back. You need to set realistic goals for yourself if you want to make a long-term change. This is going to force you to change your habits forever rather than just temporarily. Try replacing unhealthy foods with healthy foods a little at time. Putting your new diet and workout routine on overload is just going to overwhelm you.
Don’t ignore the weight room
Many women find the weight room to be a scary place (which is fair for some gyms). In reality however, weight lifting is a must. You don’t have to life heavy weights or squat until you can’t walk, but toning your muscles is going to help you reach your physical goal quicker. Weight lifting can be a full body workout if you do it correctly and can even help you burns calories even after your workout is over.
Have a workout buddy
It’s really hard to get started on your weight loss journey all by yourself. If you’re doing it with a friend or family member, you’re more likely to stay on track and keep motivated. You need someone to make sure you’re not cheating your diet or skipping those gym classes. Try finding someone that’s in the same boat as you and has a comparable amount of weight to lose. You can even make it into a friendly competition if you’re up for it!
Getting fit for the summer can be intimidating, but if you take it one day at a time and stay strong, there’s nothing you can’t do! Keep your goals in mind and be proud of everyday that you wake up and choose to be healthy.
