A Look at Rug Trends - What's Hot in 2018?

by Editor (editor), , April 14, 2018

To keep overwhelm at bay, you can start by taking a look at some of the rug trends in 2018.

Whether your interior design style is modern, minimalistic, shabby chic, Scandinavian, or industrial, chances are you need a rug. Rugs are essential to your interior space, regardless of your style. When you hear the word 'rugs', you may be forgiven for immediately thinking of old Persian carpets.

Nowadays, you can lose yourself in the world of rugs and choose from many different sizes, styles, textures, patterns and colors. To keep overwhelm at bay, you can start by taking a look at some of the rug trends in 2018.

Rug layering

Boost your creativity by adding one rug on top of another. Using two or more rugs in a way that compliments the rest of your room is not as hard as it sounds and you can experiment with different colors, patterns, and textures until you find a combination that is perfect for you. Rug layering can change the dynamic of your room in a way that could otherwise be difficult to achieve with only one rug. It can also add a visual interest to your flooring and bring all the features of your space together as one.

Tribal pattern rugs

Tribal pattern rugs provide homeowners with a unique way of incorporating a culture’s art into their interior design. There are so many different tribal rugs available that you will be able to find one that meets your specific requirements and style. Tribal rugs often differ from locally mass-produced rugs in terms of quality and attention to detail. Knowing the origins and background story of your tribal rug also ads interest to your overall design, especially if you have a related theme.

Chevron

Chevron rugs have very unique and appealing V-shapes that are compatible with most design styles, especially modern decoration. Their geometric lines give any area a crisp, contemporary look and is definitely one of the big trends in 2018. Because this pattern is more prominent, chevron patterned rugs are rarely used for large areas. They are mostly used to add interest to spaces that would otherwise seem dull or lifeless. There are many different styles of chevron rugs available and you still have ample choice in terms of color and texture.

Vintage rugs

Old and worn-out rugs can give a space a repurposed look and works especially well when you need a little contrast for a modern or minimalistic space. You can also use them to warm up a room that is dominated by cool tones and smooth surfaces. Vintage carpets create the illusion of time that went by and can make a room seem lived-in and established. This is the perfect trend for someone that feels sentimental about a rug they inherited or received as a gift. If you are starting your design project from scratch, you can still create an environment for you to use your old rug – and it will look great!

Abrasive and geometric

Brightly colored rugs with large angular shapes is ideal for you if you want to fill your room to the brim with personality. These rugs are trending right now and are popular despite the fact that they contradict the basic rules of interior design in an obvious fashion. These rugs have an amazing capability to bring relevance to other pieces of furniture or décor that looks out of place, especially if their colors can be matched with those of the rug.

These rugs are purely designed to make a statement, and you should try to limit their use to smaller areas like dining rooms or entryways. When used as large area rugs, you may run the risk of overpowering your other decorations and color schemes. Of course, this is only a recommendation and if you feel it works, it works.
