OEM VS. Aftermarket Products?

Similar to many industries, those in the pipeline industry often face the debate of whether or not to purchase and use original equipment manufacturers products or aftermarket products.

Similar to many industries, those in the pipeline industry often face the debate of whether or not to purchase and use original equipment manufacturers products or aftermarket products.

Each of these options comes with their own set of both pros and cons, and it is beneficial to research both before making a decision.

criteria to keep in mind when comparing these two are the cost, variety, availability, quality, and warranties available. Each of these will vary depending on whether the product is an original manufacturers product or an aftermarket product.

Cost
When it comes to price, aftermarket products are typically less expensive. This is due to the options available, and therefore prices are more competitive.

The amount you can save by choosing aftermarket products depends significantly on the brand, but can also be indicative of the quality as well.

Quality
It is impossible to say whether OEM or aftermarket is better quality, as this is wholly dependent on the product and the company manufacturing them.

In some cases, the OEM products will give you more peace of mind, as they should be of equal quality to the part you are upgrading or replacing. If, however, you need a new part due to poor quality, an aftermarket option may be better suited.

Companies that manufacturer these aftermarket products often take the original as a base and work out any known problems. This can result in a higher quality product.

However, the assurance is less, as aftermarket products may not be covered by a warranty, as the OEM products will be.

Insurance Implications
Equipment is typically under warranty from the manufacturing company for at least a few years. If you are experiencing problems with any part and are in need of replacement products, the first place to look is the manufacturers, as they may replace the part free of charge under your existing warranty.

If you are simply upgrading, and you choose to go with aftermarket products, this may void the current warranty on the equipment.

Variety
Shopping aftermarket affords you a lot more variety than the original manufacturer can typically offer. However, as mentioned before, this variety can vary greatly in cost and quality, especially compared to the original product.

Some companies offer their customers a choice as they offer both type of products in hopes of providing their consumers with the best product available to match their needs.

Availability
A major pro of aftermarket products is that they will be much easier to get your hands on.

The original manufacturers' products are often only available directly from the manufacturer, which can cause problems if you need a part or product quickly and the manufacturer is far away or unavailable.

On the other hand, aftermarket products are more readily available and may be more convenient, depending on your situation.

Weigh It Out
While we cannot say that one option is better than the other, we can give you the necessary criteria to use to compare the two for yourself.
