More Than An Upset

The New York Giants 17-14 upset against the New England Patriots displayed and told their whole season in just one game

Everyone said it couldn't be done against the Patriots.  That, it's impossible to beat Belichick, Brady, Moss, Maroney, the Patriots defense.

And in the end, they shocked the world, maybe even the universe.

The 2007 New York Giants can be defined in two ways, one of which more definite than the others.

They can be defined as "Road Warriors" as they went 11-0 on the road including the Super Bowl.  The list includes a victory in London over the Miami Dolphins, and going 3-0 in the playoffs at Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay, mainly thanks to their defense.

But the best way to define the 2007 New York Giants would simply be: "Resilient".

They were a team that started the season 0-2, allowing 80 points in their first two games.  Most began to lose hope in the Giants.  Eli was being benched on some drives in favor of Jared Lorenzen.  The fans eventually wanted Eli Manning and Giants head coach Tom Coughlin gone. Retired Giants runningback Tiki Barber began to openly question and downtalk former teammate Eli Manning.

Then they won six in a row beginning with their goal-line stand against the Washington Redskins, and a 12-sack performance against Philadelphia.

Nobody gave them a chance in the playoffs, especially being the fifth seed, as they went against Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay.  They said the Cowboys would destroy a banged up Giants secondary and the Giants had no chance against Brett Favre and the Packers and Lambeau field.

The defense, once again, stepped up in times of doubt as all three playoff games were ended by interceptions, two by R.W. McQuarters (one in Tampa Bay and one in Dallas in the last minute), and one by Cory Webster in Green Bay in overtime.

After being labeled a 13 point underdog against an undefeated, record-breaking New England Patriots team, the Giants once again stepped up to the challenge.  They held the "35.7 points per game" Patriots to just 14 points, and Eli Manning, who was close to being run out of town, threw the touchdown pass that would shock the world.

That along with denying the Patriots the label as the "Greatest team ever."

The Giants resiliency in the Super Bowl was best shown with 1:09 left in the game when Eli Manning escaped being sacked by three Patriots defenders and threw the pass to David Tyree who made a "catch for the ages".

The Giants faced every type of criticism and scrutiny.  From starting 0-2 to barely making the playoffs, from being the hacks of the town to being the heroes of the town, maybe America for that matter (except Boston).

The 2007 New York Giants displayed heart, desire and most importantly resiliency.

The motto of the NFL this season was "Who wants it more?"  Despite the Patriots path towards perfection, our question has been answered.
