Importance of Medicinal Plants

The importance of medicinal plants is as follows:

Ayurveda is a vast subject dealing with human health, vigor and well-being. Using extensively herbs and plant products, Ayurveda strives to help the body achieve its health goals, without any side effects or use of chemicals. There are many medicinal plants and herbs that have antiseptic properties that wipe off diseases and germs in the long run. They also stop the growth of viruses, bacteria and fungi that cause the diseases and provide a nourishing and fit body. These medicinal plants have soothing and calming properties and are mostly used as sedatives.

Medicinal plants are popularly known as botanical drugs that have been in practice since the ancient times, loaded with phytochemicals and antioxidants. Medicinal plants are packed with secondary -metabolites that include alkaloids, glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, steroids etc. Most of these medicinal plants are aromatic in nature with aphrodisiac properties hence are also very popular in the market. They can cure most illnesses without any long-term side effects and are mostly organic. The significance of medicinal plants lies in the fact that across the world there are over 20,000 such varieties and species that help in freeing us of ailments.

The importance of medicinal plants is as follows:

1. Heal wounds

Many popular herbs like black pepper, cinnamon, aloe vera, sandalwood, ginseing are very good and effective in healing wounds, cuts and bruises. These plants are antiseptic and anti-bacterial in nature and hence prevent the spread of germs and promote growth of healthy skin cells. They also help in treating sores and boils effectively.

2. Can be grown easily

The most important significance of medicinal plants includes the fact that they can be easily grown in the backyard kitchen garden or even in small pots. They can be used daily in food or decoration and even enhance the taste of the dish. Plants like rosemary, oregano, thyme, mint, cilantro, fennel, chives and sage are popular in Italian cooking as well, apart from promoting one’s health.

3. Are blood purifiers

In today’s times when we lead a life full of stress and pollution which significantly deteriorates our health, it is important to eat fresh, healthy and organic. Most of the medicinal plants or herbs like spearmint and cilantro help in detoxifying our blood and eliminating the contaminants and hence increasing immunity in the body.

4. Anti-biotic

The medicinal plants are loaded with antibiotic properties and hence eradicate harmful bacteria and fungi that cause infection. Herbs like turmeric are very popular in Indian cooking and used in many home remedies to heal wounds fast.

5. Antipyretic

The medicinal plants are also antipyretic in nature and are wonderful to reduce fever and control the body heat generated by increased infection. Herbs like black pepper, sandalwood and safflower give a cooling effect to the body.

6. Increase blood circulation

Medicinal herbs like caraway seeds, cardamom, chamomile, coriander, peppermint, fennel, ginger, turmeric etc are all helpful in regulating blood circulation across the body, making us always feel fit and energetic. Many of these medicinal plants are main ingredients in cardiac stimulant medicines as well.

7. Astringents

Many of these medicinal herbs work wonders for our skin naturally. They are the best way to get rid of skin issues like pimples, acne, blemishes, dark spots, and works as natural astringents. Sandalwood, cinnamon and turmeric are widely used in many home made recipes for skin care.

8. Keep digestion intact

Many of the medicinal plants like caraway seeds, coriander and mint help in neutralizing the effects of acid in the stomach, thereby keeping the digestion process intact. These herbs serve as antacids and keep retain the gastric acids as well.

9. Work against communicable diseases

Many medicinal plants are disinfectants and hence destroy germs that make us ill every season change. They also destroy the growth of pathogenic microbes that cause the spread of communicable diseases like cough and cold among children.

10. Great appetizer

Both coriander and mint are widely used in Indian kitchens and are known to have great appetizing qualities. Also cloves, cardamom and turmeric also add a great aroma to the food, making it tastier.

11. Used for various medicines

Many of the medicinal plants form the basics of many medicines. Herbs like ginger, cloves, cardamom, eucalyptus etc are used widely in ayurvedic cough syrups, nose block thinners, balms, and even pain killers.

12. Sedatives

Many herbal medicines are also popular sedatives and have calming effects on the nerves. They are used in treatment of many neurological problems as well.
