Ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, interesting news and updates are surfacing. A strong indication is that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will rope in Indian veteran pacer Ashish Nehra and South African iconic cricketer Gary Kirsten as their coaches for IPL 2018. Nehra and Kristen will assist Daniel Vettori, who is the head coach of the franchise.
It is noteworthy that in spite of star studded bunch of cricketers, RCB has not been able to lift the trophy ever once in the history of IPL. Though they have made it to the finals twice so far in 2009 and 2016, but have lost to their Hyderabad counterparts. They lost to the Deccan Chargers in 2009 and the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016.
The development in the camp is indicating towards a strong commitment to prepare their players in the best possible manner and by the best cricketers of the world. The mega auction on of IPL 2018 will take place on January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru. And, both Nehra and Kristen will be named as coaches for RCB.
According to sources, Nehra will join RCB as the bowling coach cum mentor. This will be for the first time Nehra will be accomplishing the role of a coach in the IPL Twenty- Twenty Cricket. Before, he has represented the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad as player in the IPL.
Nehra has already made a permanent retirement from the world of cricket including IPL last year in November. In his farewell speech in November last year, Nehra had made it clear that he would not play cricket anymore and that also applies to his IPL career. Nehra said, “I realise that when I retire on November 1, there are five months before the next IPL and I could easily play. I could even play another year of international cricket. But that's my decision. Once I will leave, I will leave. I won't even play IPL.”
After Nehra will take over as the bowling coach and mentor, McDonald, who was the bowling coach earlier, will take the charge of bowling talent development and analytics for RCB.
Gary Kristen, on the other hand, has proved his excellent coaching ability by taking India to the top of the Test rankings in 2009. Under his coaching, India won the World Cup in 2011. After that, Kristen went back to South Africa and helped the home team become number one team in the longest format in 2012. However, his role as the Delhi Daredevil coach turned a bit sour, as he was once removed as coach of the franchise in 2015.
Both the cricketers will be helping Daniel Vettori, who is serving as the head coach of RCB. Vettori is quite optimistic about having both the cricketers in the team. He added, “I am excited to welcome Gary and Ashish to the coaching team for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Both of them bring a wealth of experience in cricket, which the team can learn from immensely. We look forward to an amazing season.”
