I am someone who has spent years working from home as a wordsmith, and I feel that it's truly something wonderful and way better than a regular 9 to 5.
We very well know that the appeal of working from home is quite high. According to research published in Forbes magazine, for over 30 million Americans, their home is their workplace. And the number is anticipated to rise to 63 million within a year- that's a whopping 43% increase.
It starts off really great because you can work in your pajamas right from your bed without any restrictions. You need not commute, and you also get special access to your very own bathroom whenever you want to. But, over time you realize you have no proper schedule, you start getting demotivated, and also that you have no good appetite. All this affects your lifestyle for worse, and you start getting unhealthy.
Working from home has its own set of challenges, especially when it's about your health. With those tempting snacks resting in your kitchen, minimal socialization, and you working in a highly unsound position, your best health intentions can drastically be sabotaged.
Although the struggle is real, it can be overcome by making a few simple changes in your daily routine. Here I present five great habits that will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle while working from home-
1) Have a Separate Office Space
As soon as you start working from home, you realize that your life is starting to get blurred together and you can no longer differentiate your personal life from your professional life. But, you need to separate both of them. For that, you should set up your desk in a place that is solely assigned to work. It should also be away from any distraction. It will help you boost your productivity, thus leading to a healthier lifestyle.
2) Set a Schedule
Establish a proper schedule might sound complicated when you are working from home as you can just keep on working if you need to. However, it's crucial to have a definitive routine you can count on right from the minute you wake up. You need to treat your work-from-home-hours just like your office hours.
A definitive plan for each day with the proper time given for work, exercise as well as rest can do wonders. Never let work bleed over your personal life, and give yourself an opportunity to work around your life.
3) A healthy diet
While working from home, you get too easy access to your kitchen stocked up with unhealthy food. However, you need to understand the importance of eating healthy and resisting the temptation to eat junk food. Purge all the unhealthy stuff from your kitchen to combat this problem.
Not only this, the blue light emitted from digital screens can trick your brain to think that it's daytime. Therefore, it is essential to include foods that help to sleep better in your diet.
Also, don't forget to keep a water bottle alongside your desk to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
4) Get Yourself a Better Chair
One of the perks of work-from-home is that you can start working wherever your laptop rests. Be it your couch, bed or your kitchen table.
However, maintaining the correct posture is essential to reduce stress and strain on your spine. You surely wouldn't want to break your neck while clinging to a flat screen for hours.
Get yourself a comfortable, but not too comfortable chair that can keep you aligned all day long. Setting up a standing desk is also a good option.
5) Take a Break
When you work from home, you generally don't have someone to share your lunch with or have a quick chat. You might end up sitting on your desk for hours without moving even once. This can hurt your health.
Make sure to give yourself proper breaks in between. Exercise your eyes to recalibrate them or workout for a while. Going out on strolls and socializing with others is also a good option. It will also prevent you from turning into a socially maladapted recluse.
