Wicked

In the spirit of Halloween, Universal Studios City Walk played host the witches of Oz and their many eccentric fans yesterday for the announcement of the Los Angeles cast of "Wicked".

For those of you who may have been living under a rock the last few years, "Wicked" the Musical is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire that takes a new look at the witches of Oz. It follows Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) and Glinda (the Good Witch) throughout an entirely re-imagined Oz, with Dorothy playing a much less significant role. The musical, which was developed in Los Angeles, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and is written by Winnie Holzman.

After a sold out 7-week run last summer, "Wicked" returns to the Pantages Theater in L.A. on February 10, 2007.

Headliners for the L.A. cast include Edin Espinosa as Elphaba and Megan Hilty as Glinda. Both were featured in the Broadway editions of Wicked.

Yesterday, City Walk announced these stars to an appreciative audience. In addition, a karaoke contest brought out "Wicked" fans young and old trying to win tickets to the show. To my surprise, many of the young men and women showed great talent while bursting out "Defying Gravity" or other tracks from the certified "Gold" soundtrack.

A costume contest allowed those with a green fetish to paint themselves to a likeness of Elphaba. Still others stuck with the less extreme Glinda costume, complete with her signature bright flower placed carefully in blonde curls.

I made off with several "Wicked" themed freebies, including a CD sampler of the soundtrack and green lipstick! (Which, I'm sure will come in handy sometime). Refreshments were offered to the large crowd, including “Wicked” branded bottled water, green and pink cupcakes, hot apple cider and witch hat cookies.

The show is one of the best performances to hit the stage in a long time. If you've been jaded by the latest shows to hit L.A., like "Sweet Charity", your faith in musical theater will be renewed by "Wicked"!

Tickets are on sale today on www.ticketmaster.com or broadwayla.com. In addition, you can phone in an order by calling 213-365-3500 or 714-740-7878. Ticket prices range from $27.50-$80.50.
