Think Chivalry is Dead? Check Out the Latest in Martial Arts…

Bored? Overweight? Why not try martial arts? After all, there’s a dojo on every corner. Karate, Judo, Tae kwon do. It’s all so very Crouching Tiger. The eastern martial arts certainly have a distinguished history and commercial appeal, but have you ever considered the western marital arts? Never heard of them? Well you’re not alone.

Author Gregory Mele, founder of the Chicago Swordplay Guild writes: If you tell most martial artists today that you study “Western” martial arts, they will either look at you with confusion, skepticism, or incredulity. Mele goes on to say: It seems absurd to believe that the cultures that produced everything from the legions of Rome to the horrors of nuclear warfare, would somehow have been completely ignorant in personal defense.

Of course they were far from ignorant. Medieval and Renaissance Europe produced a rich variety of lethal combat forms. Knights did more than ride around looking shiny, they knew how to fight, and our museums are filled with period manuscripts showing exactly how they did it. In the past decade, a dedicated group of scholars and western martial artists have been studying these manuscripts and are breathing life into this long-dead art. Groups like the Chicago Swordplay Guild are teaching techniques that made the western warrior one of the finest and most feared in the world. And now the Los Angeles area has a similar group.

Christian Vivo, a fencing instructor with 27 years of experience, is opening the Academy of Arms in Burbank. This non-profit group offers evening classes in the combat systems from Medieval and Renaissance Europe. But it isn’t all about the fighting. The Academy also studies important warrior philosophies such as chivalry, a word that has nearly lost its meaning.

So if you’re looking for something to fill your evenings, consider western martial arts. Whether it’s for fun or fitness, confidence or camaraderie, western martial arts delivers.

For more information about western martial arts, visit or call the Academy at (818) 276-1936. The Academy of Arms is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving the historical martial arts of Europe. Classes start in late January.
