Mr. Tangerine says Good-bye to 2007

by James Hershiser (writer), Irvine, December 28, 2007

Mr. Tangerine must say good-bye to 2007: what a silly year! But then, aren't all years silly, really?

Yes, friends and neighbors, the year of our Common Era known as 2007 is coming to an end, and with the end of this silly year comes the end of Mr. Tangerine...yes, I know, we are all crying about this, but he must go back to the Tangerine Dream where he came from, to be replaced by...well, uh, me. Yes, the sarcastic writer slime known as Mr. Hershiser will be taking his place: don't worry, I will try to be better than Mr. Tangerine, which should not be too hard, judging from the nasty article comments.

Now, from one form of silliness to another: the year 2007, the Year of the Silly? But of course! How else can we describe a year where we have someone called Hannah Montana, who I still have no clue who that is, become more popular than God, while we have the current Young Starlet class do their best to appear in the latest episode of "Cops"? We have the presidential race go in 2 months from a virtual lock on the party nominees to it's anyone's guess, roll the dice please? We have the next comings of Christ in sports (David Beckham, Michael Vick) either lay eggs or go to jail? We have the weather turn silly, from drought to floods to snowstorms, all over the place?

Wait a minute, just wait a minute...uh, have we not heard all this before? Have we not heard about people no one has a clue about suddenly become really popular (like Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Britney Spears), more popular than God even? Have we not heard in previous years about presidential races going from a virtual lock into absolute chaos? 1992 comes to mind...Bill who? Who in the world was H. Ross Perot? When does the weather NOT turn into total silliness, droughts, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, Anderson Cooper? Have we not had in previous years the saviors of their sports turn out to do nothing for them (Pele), or icons end up in jail (Pete Rose)? It's like Yogi Berra stated, "It's like deja vu all over again"...Is this year really any sillier than any other? I think not: it is just the usual gang of idiots, mainly us, going through the usual silly motions of living on this planet called Earth. We might not like it, but face it, folks: we are ALL silly, in one form or another, and the Earth is silly, too. Hey, how else do you explain the weather, the improbability of life itself even existing, Donald Trump's hair? I suggest to you, gentle readers, this: that life IS silly, they are one and the same.

I bet Earth even knows who Hannah Montana is. Wow, how silly! So, here's a toast to the end of the Silly Year that was 2007, and a welcome to the Silly Year that will be 2008: as long as we are silly, we know we are alive. Let the silliness commence!
