The Making of a Slave

Making free people into slaves required uncivil practices which allowed the slave makers trainings the ability to break the slave as you would a horse. Such teachings were instructed by William Lynch, slave master, plantation owner.

Lynch was a British slave owner in the West Indies who came to the United States to tell American slave owners how to keep their slaves under control in addition to expressing how disconcerting it was to him to see them killing their slaves and losing their financial investments. It is alleged that the term "lynching" is derived from Lynch's name, and amply so I might add. The following is an excerpt taken from a speech that William Lynch gave at slave conventions, he was one among many who spoke about how to train slaves to be like sheep dogs who would be very critical of each other while shadowing each other so that the slave master would be free from having to watch their slave's every move, in addition the slave master would be able to save his investment by not killing the slaves (for trying to escape or other infractions) due to this new system. Believe it or not Lynch stated that if white slave masters would diligently implement his plan, it would work on the slaves psychologically for generations (estimated to work for 300 years) to come. This is a general presentation as an example or supposition to my article “The Legacy of Slavery and the Aftermath of Racism”; it further illustrates the methods that were applied across the board and stands today as proof of an accreted effort to assert this universal conspiracy to undermine a people. This article further demonstrates that blacks of today have subsisted unequally damaged by slavery and therefore are continued victims of its aftereffects. Notwithstanding many still believe themselves to be free; they go about their lives with many invisible shackles on their minds and among their lives. Some who do not share this fate stand behind the notion that slavery no longer exist, they feel that no one today committed the crimes of oppression and slavery on any person or descendants of slaves, so why should any body ask for reparations. Well this letter is a copy of the concerted effort that was taught and orchestrated chiefly by William Lynch, it illustrates the fact that slaves still exist and that slave masters also still exist, because the masters today are those who continually hold power to oppress and enslave while the slaves are those who have no knowledge of themselves yet they constantly try to control each other for the love of their master, the slave mentality and the master mentality still exist today and therefore so does the crimes and the claims against those crimes. Slavery for the slaves have never ended it merely transformed itself like a worm that goes into a cocoon, changing from slavery to racism, which is another form of slavery.

Herein rest the problem, are we (the American nation) truly free or are we still slaves (the shackles of slavery enslaves us all)? It can be quite impractical for the slave to be able to answer this question because it is they who have been chained up inside the cages of oppression and like any living creature that has been caged for so long they will be apprehensive about leaving the illusion of security within the cage. Even when the gates of those cages have been opened, they will cease to love and depend on themselves, they will in fact hate themselves. We know through medical research that at some point a captive (the enslaved victims) will begin to depend and love its captors, and it would be very difficult to get them to go without their oppressors. Everywhere you find the oppressor you will find the oppressed, if he is in the field they have to be in the field, if you find the oppressor learning a new style of dress you will find the oppressed learning it too, if he has straight hair the oppressed wants that too, and if he decides to oppress others the oppressed will assist him. In slavery we found that if the master was sick then the slaves felt sick and they also felt fear, saying “what we gonna’ do?, we sick”, if he has bad luck the slaves cried more and louder that the master, this was all conditioning and those mental conditionings are still prevalent today. On the other hand if a slave were to talk against the slave master you will find other slaves that would verbally bash and abuse that dissenting slave for his condemnation of the master, he might even turn him in (knowing that the decenting slave might be killed) for a reward from the master and that reward would generally be a kind word then back to business as usual, “now get back to work”. I have found that none of these scenarios have diminished with in our society, that the slaves still perform the rituals that plague the people from within their own minds (it will be increasingly impossible for the slave to make an independent decision about anything without thinking of the slave master first, without considering issues in black and white), while the master mentality continues to promote their superior attitudes and to sometimes subjectify the slaves through the use of racism and overt and abusive slave treatment. Long after the slaves are set free they shall still carry with them some of these anxieties, the slave mentality goes deep within the mental genetics of the slave and it will certainly be generations upon generations before that mind virus will dissipate within the people. Currently we face the home grown problems that we see within our society, it is an ongoing clash between the have-s and have not-s, the political power and the recessive political power, and all of these stem from the struggle between the slave mentality and the master mentality.

The beginning of the end for a normal mentality here in the Americas is herein the pages of William Lynch’s speech, and it not only effected the slaves for generations but it infected the slave masters as well…..

Presenting: William Lynch, as he gives his business proposal on how to train a better slave, he stands as one of the most impressive examples of how slavery continues to affect the social order and people of this nation.

The following is courtesy of The Freeman Institute and has been credited to William Lynch, a White slave owner, who reportedly made the speech on the banks of the James River in 1712. We substituted the word "BLACK" for the more degrading (N) word that was used. This speech and additional material is on this web site not to state an opinion or to give offense to anyone, but to augment Black Studies materials available to electronic researchers. (That’s Writers and educators like us…)

Speech by William Lynch:

"Gentlemen, I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First, I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the Colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me on my modest plantation in the West Indies where I have experimented with some of the newest and still the oldest methods of control of slaves.
Ancient Rome would envy us if my program were implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish. I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cords of woods as crosses for standing human bodies along its highways in great numbers you are here using the tree and the rope on occasion.

I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree a couple of miles back. You are not only losing a valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed.

Gentlemen, you know what your problems are: I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems; I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them. In my bag here, I have a fool proof method for controlling your Black slaves. I guarantee every one of you that if installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 hundred years. My method is simple. Any member of your family or your overseer can use it.

I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves: and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences, and think about them.
On top of my list is "Age", but it is there only because it starts with an "A": the second is "Color" or shade, there is intelligence, size, sex, size of plantations, status on plantation, attitude of owners, whether the slave live in the valley, on hill, East, West, North, South, have fine hair, coarse hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences. I shall give you an outline of action-but before that I shall assure you that distrust is stronger than trust and envy is stronger than adulation, respect, or admiration.

The Black slave after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self re-fueling and self generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands. Don't forget you must pitch the old Black male vs. the young Black male, and the young Black male against the old Black male. You must use the dark skin slaves vs. the light skin slaves and the light skin slaves vs. the dark skin slaves. You must use the female vs. the male, and the male vs. the female. You must also have your white servants and overseers distrust all Blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us. They must love, respect and trust only us.
Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control. Use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity. If used intensely for one year, the slaves themselves will remain perpetually distrustful. Thank you, gentlemen."

The difference between slavery in America and slavery in the West Indies is that the small Islands that make up the West Indies assisted the slaves in maintaining their connection to their families, unless the master sold a member of a slave family to a far off country then you would be certain to see your family member even if that person was on the other side of the island at a completely different plantation. Unfortunately slavery sales in America unusually meant that the slave would never see their family member again because America was so vast and the slave masters here in America were so cruel that your family member would or could be killed or sold often never to be seen again. The West Indies slaves recovered from slavery rapidly and obtained their independence long before American slaves (Black Americans today are still struggling, and this is why West Indians today feel that black Americans haven’t accomplished much in the way of their own independence after 400 years, they feel that they have consummated their freedom) because the fact that the West Indies slaves had close ties to their kindred they had the opportunity to maintain their pride, they secretly maintained their unity, the house slave who was uncle or father to the field slave still maintained that family unity that would help them come together when the time was right to fight for their freedom. Meanwhile the slaves in America were afraid to trust each other because with their personal families dispersed they were essentially strangers to themselves (other neighboring slaves). The mental experimentation that Lynch had taught the American slave masters mortally wounded the psychological health of black people, extending even to this day; we call this attitude the slave mentality. Massive wounds however unseen are invested so deeply that black folks find it impossible to agree on any issue, and everybody (blacks) wants to be right about everything and every topic, no one could get out (no one could escape slavery or its mentality) due to this crab theory (you know the theory where the bucket of live crabs try to get our of the bucket and no one can escape because as each one climbs to the top someone else (one of the crabs trying to get out will try to climb over the one who is already at the top of the bucket an in the process pull each other back into the bucket) who is also trying to get out pulls them down back into the oppression and the slave situation within that bucket), this was the difference between the West Indies slaves and the American style slaves, in comparison like night and day. I have witnessed many arguments that are taking place between the West Indian people who think that they are better in some way than the Black Americans because they come to this country and after a few years you see them prosper, buying homes and businesses, restaurants and so on, and yet black Americans continue to struggle under the weight of racism. I submit that we must not forget that it was Black Americans who paved the way for all people of color to come to America to do what they are able to do. Black Americans took the blunt impact of the worst form of slavery on the face of the earth and went on to organize and lead marches, protest, and civil rights movements which allowed others the opportunity to be free enough to be semi productive here in America as people of color. You should also know that all foreigners were indoctrinated against Black Americans by the white government’s propaganda, influenced before ever entering America, everybody was taught against the Blacks in America in order to maintain that mental slavery over Black Americans and to discredit them so that no one would hire them, nor respect them, or socially interrelate with them. Black Americans became the greatest scapegoat and the most feared skeleton that hung in the American psyche closet upon racks of ill fated schisms, although West Indian people maintained their ability to work together, they to some degree held on to a greater portion of their humanity and Whites had less to fear from them then they did from Black Americans.
The William Lynch experimentation that was applied (administered by slave masters to all Black American slaves) to Black American slaves in broad strokes devastated the internal nature of black slaves, it became the number one article that was used to strip away an entire culture while mutilating and destroying the humanity of a people. The convention that William Lynch gave his speech informed the slave owners in America not how to make a slave but rather how to make a better slave, but the speech was only the introduction to this indoctrination; the main lesson came from William Lynch’s letters which instructed in greater articulate detail.

Here is a small portion of these instructional letters…

THE BREAKING PROCESS OF THE AFRICAN WOMAN
Excerpt taken from the William Lynch letters, instructional material on how to make a slave:

“Take the female and run a series of tests on her to see if she will submit to your desires willingly. Test her in every way, because she is the most important factor for good economics. If she shows any sign of resistance in submitting completely to your will, do not hesitate to use the bullwhip on her to extract that last bit of [b----] out of her. Take care not to kill her, for in doing so, you spoil good economics. When in complete submission, she will train her offspring in the early years to submit to labor when they become of age. Understanding is the best thing. Therefore, we shall go deeper into this area of the subject matter concerning what we have produced here in this breaking process of the female nigger. We have reversed the relationship; in her natural uncivilized state, she would have a strong dependency on the uncivilized nigger male, and she would have a limited protective tendency toward her independent male offspring and would raise male offspring to be dependent like her. Nature had provided for this type of balance. We reversed nature by burning and pulling a civilized nigger apart and bullwhipping the other to the point of death, all in her presence. By her being left alone, unprotected, with the MALE IMAGE DESTROYED, the ordeal caused her to move from her psychologically dependent state to a frozen, independent state. In this frozen, psychological state of independence, she will raise her MALE and female offspring in reversed roles. For FEAR of the young male’s life, she will psychologically train him to be MENTALLY WEAK and DEPENDENT, but PHYSICALLY STRONG. Because she has become psychologically independent, she will train her FEMALE offsprings to be psychologically independent. What have you got? You’ve got the nigger WOMAN OUT FRONT AND THE nigger MAN BEHIND AND SCARED. This is a perfect situation of sound sleep and economics. Before the breaking process, we had to be alertly on guard at all times. Now, we can sleep soundly, for out of frozen fear his woman stands guard for us. He cannot get past her early slave-molding process. He is a good tool, now ready to be tied to the horse at a tender age. By the time a nigger boy reaches the age of sixteen, he is soundly broken in and ready for a long life of sound and efficient work and the reproduction of a unit of good labor force. Continually through the breaking of uncivilized savage niggers, by throwing the nigger female savage into a frozen psychological state of independence, by killing the protective male image, and by creating a submissive dependent mind of the nigger male slave, we have created an orbiting cycle that turns on its own axis forever, unless a phenomenon occurs and re-shifts the position of the male and female slaves. We show what we mean by example. Take the case of the two economic slave units and examine them close”.

THE NEGRO MARRIAGE
We breed two nigger males with two nigger females. Then, we take the nigger male away from them and keep them moving and working. Say one nigger female bears a nigger female and the other bears a nigger male; both nigger females—being without influence of the nigger male image, frozen with a independent psychology—will raise their offspring into reverse positions. The one with the female offspring will teach her to be like herself, independent and negotiable (we negotiate with her, through her, by her, negotiates her at will). The one with the nigger male offspring, she being frozen subconscious fear for his life, will raise him to be mentally dependent and weak, but physically strong; in other words, body over mind. Now, in a few years when these two offsprings become fertile for early reproduction, we will mate and breed them and continue the cycle. That is good, sound and long range comprehensive planning.”
In essence the slave master was taught to breed fear into the slaves through the use of these cruel methods, to wipe out the natural relationships that fostered family health especially between a black man and a black women.

If you really want to see what cruel methods were suggested, taught and applied to the black race in order to create slaves and to preserve the slave mentality check out the Willie Lynch letters @

Before we could ever hope to possibly move forward with “freedom and justice for all”, we must look backward to the causes which continue to block our call for unity as a nation. We will never be able to obtain “one nation under God with liberty and Justice for all”, if we don’t have the national integrity to resolve these growing issues within our culture and our collective society. My contention for a successful unification of the people is to first, admit acknowledgement of these problems, then to accept that these plagues still afflict our nation, and that we can do something positive and conclusive about it, it is our prerogative to reason together, and to create constructive solutions built upon clinical thinking and decisions in which to correct these problems. Surely these problems will not be overturned immediately but we have the opportunity to manifest a solution, if we as a society work together to ascertain one. I believe that these issues of constraint and torment still inflame the American society, even thought the problems of race relations in America seem silent at times, it is however a growing beast eager to pounce and consume.

We must never forget:

A house that is divided shall undoubtedly fall, but a nation that is unjust shall be destroyed in its own wickedness.
