Borderlands 3 to be Developed by Gearbox or Not?

by jhonsonmonger (writer), , January 04, 2017

The first game in the Borderlands series was launched in 2009 and the second title was released in September 2012. By August 2011, the game has sold some 4.5 million units worldwide.

There’s a doubt whether the title will be developed by Gearbox Software who were responsible for developing the previous games in the series. Gearbox had once promised that they’ll be posting updates on all projects they are working on but they have simply refused to reveal anything regarding Borderlands 3. Perhaps they are off the project and its being developed by some other developers.

The title is an action role-playing first-person shooter game developed by Gearbox Software for PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Mac OS. The first game in the Borderlands series was launched in 2009 and the second title was released in September 2012. By August 2011, the game has sold some 4.5 million units worldwide.

There are a lot of confusion surrounding the game and people aren’t even sure if Borderlands 3 is currently under development. It’s been 5 years when the last game was launched, as per Fabnewz, there are chances that the next Borderland may not happen at all. But Gearbox doesn’t really follow a pattern in releasing the games it’s not like if the possible date came and went, and then we can expect the title will never make it to the market. For a game that had the kind of success that Borderlands series had, it’s not really logical to not continue the series.

In December 2016, fans of the series were expecting an announcement of Borderlands 3 at the Game Awards but instead of speaking about Borderlands, Gearbox only revealed that they collaborated with People Can Fly and remastered “Bulletstorm: Full Clip.” The official release of this title is set on April 7th, 2017.

Besides the release date, one of the biggest rumours surrounding Borderlands 3 is that the name of the game may change. At the PAX East, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford stated: “Obviously, there is going to be another Borderlands.” And went on to state that “we don’t even know if we’re going to call it that.” It could be risky to change the name of a title, after fans have had to wait years for the title to roll out. Changing the name could potentially backfire. The fact remains that these speculations haven’t officially been given a green signal by Gearbox. When to confirm the change of name, Pitchford said it could be Borderlands 4 or Borderlands 5, there’s no knowing. He went on to say that whatever he says that point will change by the time they start working on the game.

There’s another rumour that states that there are chance of Borderlands 3 being set on a different island. The previous titles were set on a planet called Pandora and as per speculations this time the title will be set on an altogether different world. At the PAX East Pitchford has said that are not working on the game but are totally willing to. He also said that his team will need to think about the title and that they’ll need help.

Besides these, if there’s one thing that fans care about more than anything else, its Borderlands 3’s release date. There no official date of the launch of the title and chances are there’s won’t be a release date any time soon. As far as speculation goes, Borderlands 3 will most likely roll out around the end of 2018. Better mark the character.
