As the holiday season draws closer, lots of us start to think about our goals and self improvement strategies for the coming year. There are lots of areas of our lives where the new year can be a perfect time to start doing things differently, learn new skills, and work towards making ourselves and our lives better. Just one of these is how we cook and eat. Whether you want to eat more healthily, learn to cook in a new and delicious style, save money on feeding your family, or just try new things, the kitchen is a great place to look for inspiration for things you can do as new year's resolutions and 2017 goals. Here are just three ideas:
Incorporate a New Protein Every Month
Protein is usually the most interesting part of a meal, and is also something your body really needs. However, most of us stick to the same few types of meat, fish or plant proteins, which can be a little boring. There are lots of proteins out there you can try incorporating into your cooking, for instance, meat lovers could try adding more venison into their diet as a change from beef.
Thanks to the rise in farms using things like a deer supplement to produce great tasting meat, venison is easier to find than ever and the quality is more consistent than with wild deer. There are more exotic meats to try too, like crocodile, springbok or snake, and of course, a huge range of fish beyond the usual cod, salmon, tuna and swordfish. For vegetarians, there are also a wide variety of unusual nuts and beans you can start adding. Add one new protein to one meal or more a week every month and you'll soon have a far more interesting diet!
Pick a Culture, And Try One New Recipe a Week
Foreign cuisine is interesting and fun to try, so why not pick a country and find a site with lots of recipes from their culture, and try one a week? If you already love something like Thai or Lebanese food and would like to try more and be able to cook it yourself, this is a great way to do it, or you can pick a country at random just to experiment!
Buy and Use One New Cooking Appliance
Tools are as important as ingredients, and gadgets make cooking fun! Why not buy one new thing you could use regularly, and learn how to cook with it? Whether it is a pressure cooker, a slow cooker, a pizza stone, a wok, a pasta shaper, a steamer, or anything else that takes your fancy, buy it with a commitment to using it at least once a week, so it becomes an interesting new part of your cooking arsenal rather than a seldom used object.
These are just three ideas for 2017 new year's resolutions that will broaden your horizons when it comes to cooking and food.
