The 10th Annual L.A. Kings Downtown On Ice.
Los Angeles-Visitors to the Southland’s largest holiday outdoor ice skating rink, L.A. Kings Downtown On Ice, came prepared with sunglasses and bundled up in mittens, gloves and an extra layer of clothing’s. The first day of December in Los Angeles felt like the windy city of Chicago. It was a chilly, winter afternoon at Pershing Square, (532 South Olive Street) an oasis for free events and affordable family fun.
I made the trip to Pershing Square downtown on public transit to partake in the Youth Programming, scheduled until January 19, 2008. There were two inter-active performers entertaining kids and their families on December 1, 2007. Vocalist Jerry John with Bob Fazio on keyboards opened the program with an eclectic mixture of songs. This duo thoroughly entertained the crowd with a variety of genres of music (jazz, r&b, rock, latin and the blues). You could see people swaying on the ice skating rink as well in their chairs to the following tunes: “Mr. Magic,†“All of Me,†“Don’t Go,†“Get Ready,†“Old Time Rock & Roll,†“Evil Ways,†“Down Home Blues,†and “What I Sayâ€. Several kids from the audience joined the duo on stage as background singers.
After a short intermission, Eddie Medrano entertained the kids with some magic. All in attendance were appreciative of the events during the Youth Programming taking place at the L.A. Kings Downtown On Ice, celebrating its 10th spectacular season.
With a low admission price of only $6( plus skate rental fee $2), this is by far the coolest way to add a little winter chill to the holidays, as well as an economical way to entertain out of town guests without breaking your holiday budget. Special events like the free youth hockey clinics, several free concerts series (Weekday lunchtime concerts and Sunday swing concerts), Friday night freeze zone, Saturday Youth Programming, winter holiday festival (December 7-9, 2007). The L.A. Kings Downtown On Ice at Pershing Square is the number one winter destination for families and out of town visitors, thanks to sponsorship from the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the Los Angeles Kings, and Councilmember Jan Perry (9th District). “Each year with the help of our Recreation and Parks Department and the Los Angeles Kings, we have the pleasure of offering a little piece of holiday magic to our children and their families. In its 10th season, the L.A. Kings Downtown Ice Skating Rink at Pershing Square offers the people who come to shop, eat, or just explore downtown with a safe, engaging outdoor activity,†said Councilwomen Jan Perry who represents the Ninth Council District which includes downtown Los Angeles. “I encourage Los Angelenos from throughout our city to come enjoy the fun!â€
Centrally located in the heart of the City of Angels, Pershing Square is easily accessible by car, bus or rail. Commuters are rewarded due to a collaboration with Metro, Metrolink and Montebello Bus lines allows riders to receive a $1 skating discount by showing a coupon available on all mass transit lines. Several transit lines conveniently stop at Pershing Square Station. Underground discount parking is available with validation.
