Musically Speaking

by V (writer), Venice!, December 01, 2007

I have 14 minutes to write this article. It's a self imposed deadline as I've really got to get my Friday night started. So here are hot tips for ‘Bands to Watch' in LA this weekend.

It's 5:16pm.

Friday 30th November

Hello Stranger http://www.myspace.com/hellostrangermusic

10pm @ The Echo
1822 Sunset Blvd, Echo Park CA 90026 http://www.attheecho.com/

This 4 -piece pop/ indie-rock outfit pack a punch with equal amounts of whimsy and fun. Everyone needs to experience, at least once, the charismatic Juliette (lead singer and style maker), her costumes and her theatrics take over first the stage and then all the men. Hang on to your hats … and your boyfriends.

Saturday 1st December

Matt Ellis http://www.myspace.com/mattellisband

10pm @ Hotel Café
1623 1/2 N. Cahuenga Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90028 http://www.hotelcafe.com/

This Aussie troubadour has been on the rise since his relocation to Los Angeles. Indie 103 is now spinning tracks and a superb album is on distribution that features the talents of such greats as Nels Cline (Wilco), Tim Young (The Youngs), Greg Leisz (Beck, Joni Mitchell), Tim Luntzel (Bright Eyes, Nora Jones, Emmylou Harris), Dave Palmer (Fiona Apple, Air) and Branden Harper (Co-producer as well as drummer). He’s come a long way this 100%, independent Singer-Songwriter and proof is in the beautiful rock/ alt-country melodies of ‘Tell the People.’ Last show for 2007.

Sunday 2nd December

Blue Eyed Son http://www.myspace.com/blueeyedson

9pm @ Air Condition
625 Lincoln Blvd
Venice 90291
No Cover

So pop rock or alt-country not your style? How about some surfer-acoustic tunes? Formerly front man of surf-punk band ‘40 Watt Domain,’ Blue Eyed Son has gone solo, stripped it all back and quieted down. His current release, ‘West of Lincoln’ rises and falls like the tides of the ocean he worships.

It's 5:43pm. Shit.

Hey, whoever wrote the review that mentioned the Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings show ... I know. It has been sold out for a while, so if you have any tickets PLEASE send them my way. Do get out to any of the shows above if you can though ... these are all folks who are also deserved of sold-out crowds but are still in the little-known stages of their careers. Support live, local music!
